I am thinking that you didn't actually research much, let alone talk to these carriers and see what they have to offer. I am thinking that you just read the complaints and never talked to anyone who works for these companies.
You assume that these mega carriers are a problem, when I can't see it how they would survive with so many people being screwed and no one happy at them. What my point is that there are a lot of happy people who work for them, they seem to be doing well enough to raise families and do things they want to do.
My other point is that you make it what you want it to be. You won't be happy with anyone unless you get that there really isn't much difference between those alleged mega carriers and many of those mom and pop shops.

From one vet to another, I wish you the best of luck
I too am just starting out and have been sending out apps in an effort to possibly "avoid" joining a mega-carrier, so I have similar feelings to yours.
Best of luck in your endeavors -
Not to hijack the thread, but I see pattyj is in here, I'm actually waiting to hear about attending an orientation with the company you drive for I'm pretty hopeful
Don't worry, not stalking you, just took notice of your thread a few weeks back when I was doing some research on companies here in Omahapattyj Thanks this. -
Forum is my second home, lol.I had to quit Hill Bros before even getting started,I only went thru orientation because I had respitory infection.I took a week medical loa and still wasn't getting better so my doctor suggested I quit driving for awhile. Now I am better so job hunting is back on.

Oh, sorry to hear that
Best of luck in your job searchpattyj Thanks this. -
Thank you,it would help if I applied rather then just look, lol.Im really tired of van and reefer so my next job will probably be tanker hauling.

To the OP, have you considered intermodal, there's a lot of that in the Chicago area? I'm sure one of those companies would let you gain some experience.

Check out Superior Carriers if you don't mind tanker work. They hire a few rookies every year.

I hear a lot of good things about Averitt Express. Also, I've heard Old Dominion is as good as it gets, especially in regards to pay.
Oh, with no OTR experience though, I'd say your guess is as good as mine, but I believe Averitt Express may have a recruiting program. There are many outfits that have that, but not all of them are that good. You sound like you really want to get on with a quality company, and I don't blame you, but with no recent exp. you may have to settle for less. Until you gain more exp. of course.
I recommend that you either find a local company willing to give you a shot, or maybe try to sign up for a recruiter program with Schneider or maybe even Conway. There are some companies out there that are willing to give vets more working opportunities. You just need to talk to them. You'll find something. Just don't get discouraged if you have to settle for one of the mega carriers. You might even like it.
You know what, just call someone at Old Dominion, and see what they say. Google it, and find the listing that is closest to you. They have a list of all the phone numbers on their site. Go big or go home.
I should call Old Dominion myself, but I'm about to get into the flatbed scene.Last edited: Feb 21, 2014
