I think the card is only good for crossing back from Mex and Canada into the US. The book get's you back from anywhere if you plan to travel abroad. I'd pay the extra $ and get the book.

If you are only planning to use as entry/return to Canada, then a Passport card is all you need. Passport cards are only good at land crossing's.
If you plan to take any trips overseas or take cruises that dock in foreign ports, then you would need a regular passport. -
The book takes a little bit longer to get then the card too. Google it and it has all the info and cost. I googled it a few weeks ago for how to renew my passport.

I only need to do it to get back from Canada by land so I will get card. Thanks

1 problem is what if you have a bad medical or an major total the truck out emergency and the only way to get back is to fly? The card is only good for ground gates. Get the book or if you can both. I didn't think to check if you can have both.

it's legal to have both

If something happens and you need to fly home you are so out of luck.

A couple other ways is the enhanced drivers license if your state has it, or if your company is a FAST/Expres company, you could get the FAST card. You can use either at any land crossing, and in your personal vehicle as well. Yes, that includes crossings involving bridges across rivers. The enhanced license is likely the quicker, and cheapest. The FAST card takes quite a bit longer due to background checks from 2 countries, and we all know how slow they can be. The enhanced license just is proof of your citizenship.
