It really depends on the company you start with. Swift was my starter # .26/mile. By the end of the 1st year I was at .32/mile without extra pays (short haul sliding scale).
Pennies per mile isn't nearly as important as the number of miles.
.26 x 2500 miles= $650
.28 x 2000 miles= $560
get the point?
Make sure you get a company that gets you miles. A company that'll start you off with easy miles to get your feet wet would be good too, but good luck there.southeastdriver Thanks this. -
thank you.

Wow I thought Swift payed their drivers more. I worked my first 6 months for a local company(they have around 90 trucks) and their starting pay was 32-33cents per mile and they offered 4000 miles each week.
-
Why would you leave? Besides the fact that your 4000 miles a week is bogus.:smt017
I would rather get .40 cents a mile and do 2000 miles a week than get .30 cents a mile and run 3000.rsellers and hunts2much Thank this. -

Swift was paying more back in 03.

Hey southeast driver, what school did you go to out in Fresno, bc I was out there and looking for a school and there was this one out on Jensen somewheres out there but man, let me tell you, NO GOOD , LoL!
Oh yeah, I would recommend SWIFT bro, don't listen to all the BS, get your experience, then if you want branch out to another company and dont get suckered into a lease to own contract right out the gate.southeastdriver Thanks this. -
Not to turn into a Swift bash on pay; I only used them as an example due to personal experience. And yes, starting pay does stink, but they do give pay raises quickly that 1st year (1-3 mo, 4 mo, 6 mo, 9 mo and 1 year). Finally, the .26/mile is the west of Mississippi; I think east of the river starts at .28 (not sure).
My point was to not just focus on the pennies per mile, but to also look at the freight base the company is running so that you actually get some miles. I pretty much fiqured on changing companies after a year (then the economy tanked). -
4th year over the road, 65000 per year, company driver my first year was lucky to make 25000! money didn't start till the second year.
