Paying cash for an older semi tractor vs. financing a new one

Why would you ever buy a glider with a dd15? That defeats the whole purpose of buying a glider.

 

Why do people like 1935 3 window fords? 1962 corvettes? Mustangs? Camaros? Monte carlos? Etc etc etc. After all a Honda minivan is more comfortable than all of them.


When it comes to trucks, NOTHING looks better than a 359 or 379 extended hood.

 

I believe now I might be wrong the DD15 is a better engine without the Def or EGR

 

Better than what? A dd15 with all the emissions? Sure. Better than a 12.7 or 14l pre emissions? Not a chance in hell.

 

Any reason why it’s not better then a S60? I want to learn reason why I’m asking.

 

I helped a friend negotiate on a 95 in 2000. His old T600 was finished. They juggled some #s for Us, and He Got it with 0 dn and his trade in. $50 k. Had a 435e Cat, 550 k miles from kenworth in Rockford Il. Poor Guy had a massive heart attack about a year later. His wife let it go back to the bank, before I knew. I would have taken if over. That’s about as good as they got. 95-2002. I really like the look of 92-93s with old style sleeper, never cared for the conehead look, Lol. Nice Truck, I’d say you got a great deal.

 

Seems like you’ve thought about this and thought this through.
You don’t sound like you know much about trucks over all. Just a quick observation.
How long have you been driving?

 

I’ve heard some pretty high cost for parts on DD15s. Had mechanics tell Me to keep my 12.7, Sometimes Mechanics are slow to learn new things. A lot used to hate 444 Cummins, others Who knew how to set timing swore they were great. My Dad loved those engines. If they were tuned right. Something about step timing? I don’t remember exactly. But We almost bought a 90 379 with one. I often wonder, haven’t seen one since.Wish I had it now. I have a problem with the aerodynamic Trucks being harder to work on, fairings and plastic bumpers 3 x the price of Texas bumpers. Fuel economy is only .5 mpg better. Look at a Pete or Especially WS or Fld. Everything’s right there, accessible. The only problem I have with my Classic is the stupid fuse panel. Not enough leg room. Freightliner too cheap to make an improvement.

 

So many reasons it would take a book to list them. To fully grasp the why's you should research both engines. But let's start with the fact that the late 90s and early 2000s was the golden era of diesel engines. The sweet spot of cost/efficiency/power.

 

Yes hold its value. Easy to work on. Open hood and ...wow, there is the whole engine, in full view. Not playing peek-a-boo around air filter and a bunch of hoses etc. Years back had a 1970 IH Fleetstar, and one fourth of the engine was in the cab with me. No truck is perfect. Never had a w9 but on my old 379 just a lot if things i like better. Clutch linkage comes to mind also. Just a better set up. Some folks don't care for the longer hood..ok i get that. That's why there is other brands to choose from.
