I want to make sure that I get good experience and a good pay check. I plan on doing my time out there on the road. I understand from reading some of these post that there are a few that I diffidently want to stay away from. I live in Northern Indiana and I am looking to travel where ever to get the miles. I road shot gun for a while with my step dad and have a realistic idea of what to expect. Not looking for a new truck but don't want to be in a Cab-over (If they even exist anymore). Can you guys give me some good ideas where to apply at and what the pay per mile is to start? Really appreciate it in advance. I will be paying my own way through Driving School. I know the school has a few companies I can apply to too but want to hear from those that are out there and know what their companies are about, so again I appreciate the help in advance. Flatbed, Van any doesn't matter to me.

Smart planning on your part. Get all the endorsements, tanker/hazmat, TWIC, passport for the good paying jobs. Start a list now of good paying companies and submit several applications the day you start classes. Ignore "experience required" on the trucking company websites and apply anyway, you might hit the jackpot! Don't be too concerned about pay per mile; it's the assessorial pays that add thousands to your annual income. Assessorial pays include, stop pay, layover pay, tarp pay, detention pay, NYC pay, cross border pay, breakdown pay, etc.

Here's a few to research; I'm sure some other drivers will post some good ideas also:

    Superior Carriers
    Trimac Transportation
    Schneider Bulk
    SVTN
    Tidewater Transit
    System Transport
    Tyson Foods

Melton. 37 to start, 44 after 1 year. Newer fleet, average truck is 2 years old. APU's, inverters. Strictly flatbed. Check out the Melton forum.

When I first started I paid cash and they cut the price from 4,800 to 2,800 most of the students in my class went on to stevens and decided to go to JBS. One of the instructors told us if in 2 years 2-3 of us were still in trucking that would be a success. Looking back on it that was so true. Nice thing is you have been on the road and it seams like you have a good attitude. I like what chinatown said about apply for companies even if the said experience required. Good Luck

I started with Crete Carrier May 2004 and for 2005 my W-2 was $48,055.13. I left Crete July 2006 and when the economy melted down in 2008/2009 EVERYTHING changed. I try to call my trainer at Crete once a year and in 2009 there was a pay cut per mile plus they slowed the trucks down to 62mph. I called him back in May and he is at 49 cents per mile which is the most he has ever been paid, but he has 30 years of experience with 20 being at Crete.
