What is this? I have seen a lot of these. Does 1 just rent the truck and act as an owner operator?

Hi paryki, usually, like damutt sez, a company will need an extra truck, or have a breakdown, and need a truck short term. Trouble is, it ain't cheap. If you are considering being an O/O, there are so many trucks out there,(just check out a truck paper at a truck stop)you'll be able to score a decent truck relatively cheap. Make sure you take a mechanic with you, if you're not mechanically inclined yourself, even if you have to pay them. It will be worth it in the long run. If you have never had a truck, I suggest getting a company job 1st, as owning your own truck is really for an experienced driver. Good luck.

I worked for a company which leased almost 100 units of all sizes from Penske. Worked for them by greatly reducing overhead and capital investment. Penske does a great job with maintenance, I wouldn't hesitate buying a truck from them, unlike Ryder.

My company has so much freight, when all of the trucks are full
the recruiters are told to keep hiring drivers.
They put them in these rental trucks until somebody quits.
Keeps them from having to buy more trucks until there sure
they want to make that investment.

    Leftnut and bigred81 Thank this.

So is it the rental route that folks go as it concerns doing the owner operator thing this way or is it the leasing route with penske?

I was curious as in how people or to (single owner op) lease through Penske. I called them up because I was bored and she sent me an email. The rental deal was horrible I don't see how anyone would make money through leasing.

If you're curious give them a call they will email you a PDF file on leasing. But it was something crazy like 600/week +like 6cents/mile on top of that.

one company i worked for had a contract job/account.

they rented the trucks by the week.

this way, should the account be lost (and it was) they were NOT locked into ANY lease deal.

if YOU want to rent out a truck, i do believe you MUST have ICC numbers, as they did not (or still DO NOT) rent out to individuals.

then you have to provide proof of insurance, and other operating expenses, or run under the rental company insurance, which is VERY costly.

i see this is an old thread, but still had to respond, to those that think all they gotta do to become an o/o is to lease or rent out a truck...
