I wasn't really agreeing with you, nor was I really disagreeing. Tow companies charge what the market will bear. I have no problem with that. After all you should be too in whatever you are doing. Be it company driver or o/o. I seriously doubt you see a rate for $5 / mile and go "I think I'll call and offer them $4 / mile as that's not a fair price."
It's the same as any company, business, etc. If everyone in an area is charging $500 for a tow, that, by definition, is the going rate and is "fair" If one quotes $500 for a tow and adds another $500 in fees, then you might have a point. While I'm sure that does happen, I'd be very surprised if it happens commonly. After all most of a companies tows will still be local companies and they will go elsewhere if they get screwed.
