new driver. Looking for job. How does per diem pay work? Job pays .35 per mile by odometer plus .10 per diem. So do I actually get .45 per mile ??? Thanks for your help.

That type of stuff from the mega carriers always struck me as a scam. Worked otr for a construction type outfit and they cut me a check every week based on $50 a day per diem, they paid for the lodging.

Yep, should be 45 cpm, but ask them. The per diem is not a true per diem. What they do is give you the 10 cpm tax free basically. Big argument over whether that's a good thing or not, depends on whether or not you think the politicians are going to screw you out of the rest of your Social Security.

As a new driver, take the per diem. You got other things to worry about your first year, like not hitting stuff. Then go see a tax accountant your second year, see which way you come out ahead. Everybody's situation is different.

Per diem is mostly a scam, ESPECIALLY if the company CHARGES you for it!!! (Some charge maybe 2 cents per mile, what a rip!)

Go talk to a tax professional ... any advice you get on per diem on TTR is effectively useless.

Per diem is a bail out for MEGA company's or any other company's to take away your pay for staying out in the truck. If they pay you tax free its also going to kill your attempt to get a loan! trust me its hard enough getting loans as a truck driver especially when you have to tell them how your paid.

You get paid per diem and you can kiss every night you stay out in the truck tax dedcut GOOOOOOD BYE and oh that house you want because you made 50k on books but the peri diem pay was not taxed you might as well kiss that good night you really only made 37 on the books my man!! good ole #### you isnt so grand!

According to my accountant, I come out ahead on per diem.

And the bank seems to love me and my money.

    I bet they love it!!!

Sir, you stated you made 70k this year but your W-2 only is showing 59K. uhhhhhhhh well im paid per diem. Watch their head explode, and thats when they say I'll have to bring this up to my hire ups.

    Where do you work?

I had a union job and it was still VERY VERY VERY hard to get a loan for my house that I have. it was like pulling nails. NOTHING IS GURANTEED THERE IS NO 40 hours this isnt a 9-5. Being a trucker unless you have cash, or O/O as a company driver is hard to prove your income and it's 100% harder when being paid perdiem. also scares your loaners or anyone working with you when they find out the way your paid, you know the quote. Wheels ain't turning you ain't earning. no guaranteed 40 no guaranteed anything unless maybe if you're on salary.
