I'm not saying the US will collapse. My point is only a polyanna would assume the government will remain consistent over the next 50 years -- there just is no way to know that now.

I'm not terribly concerned with the soundness of financial institutions either. Good businesses could survive on the barter system. What would really make me concerned is if a government became unable to enforce order or began renegging on property rights.

The problem with gold is that it does not compound. It just sits there taking space. Worse, it requires expenditures to keep it secure.

Question- my husband Paystubs appears like they pay him a per-diem but then deducted. He doesn't get paid per diem. But on his year to date the positive amount is there like he's getting paid that??
    Example:
    $250 Per diem
    - $250 Per diem

A couple of very good explainations were posted in the beginning of this thread, take a minute and read them. I don't agree with they way they do it. It makes you feel like your getting ripped off.

I'm confused at how per diem can be a scam? You will make more net in your check because of less is taxed from what i gather. I will be saving 75% of every pay so i only see that as a benefit for my situation.

I've been in transportation my entire life, first as a delivery driver, then 30+ years of courier work, and now CDL. The whole industry does this taxable income "magic" to reduce their contributions to SSI, Medicare, Workers Comp, etc. In the courier business, it was all the mileage paid non taxable income (we used our own cars). Yes, it's legal, but ethical? Like above posts say, you take home more, but things like SSI/SSDI and Workers Comp, etc, will all be lower due to their monkeyshines. It is what it is.
