Well, 2008-09 were tough years at Perkins. 2010 saw slow and gradual improvement. 2011 is already looking a LOT better!
If these new rates continue like I'm seeing currently? It's gonna be a fantastic year!
I remember what rates and settlements at Perkins were like back in 2007. It's getting pretty close to that again.
However, I'm now roughly 50% more efficient than I was back then. So I may see even better settlements than 2007!
All in all, I'm glad I toughed out the hard times with Perkins. Now I have greater seniority over new guys (and I've seen that work in my favor pretty recently) and I'm strategically placed to ride the surge of a rising wave.
I will defend Perkins. But I won't encourage anyone to come here.
As I've said before, I don't want any more in-house competition for the high $$ freight.
This is just business baby!

Perkins
I see people still are willing to work for nothing.
Many years ago Perkins was a great company. Two of my bothers were leased to them back in Perkins glory days. My neighbor and his bother pulled doubles from Huntingburg, Indiana to York, PA for years. Fact is people all over my area was leased to Perkins and they were very happy.
Then the old man retired and the boys too over.
One by one everybody left I said EVERYBODY!
Why
Cause they were whiners?
No
Because they couldn't make any money!
Perkins doesn't have it present lease Purchase program just because they like truck drivers. They have it because they need truck drivers. But what they get is riff raff no teeth hillbillies who are poorly educated. Who have the dream of owning a truck.
Being an old stick hauler I saw (or see) these Perkins guys every week. Poor suckers are starving while living in a truck. If it wasn't for them having a wife that works they'd have lost their homes long ago.
Back in Huntingburg I have an old acquaintance whom I have know for over 40 years. His job besides running Huntingburg's Shop, is running after all the abandon and repossessed trucks.
Last time I talked to him it was 5 trucks a WEEK!
Get it
5 TRUCKS A WEEK!
Why?
Most just ran out of money.
Many because they are not business minded (If they were they'd wouldn't have to go slumming after a Lease Purchases deal)!
A Lease Purchase is just a Slum Lord's way of suckering in people who have no business owning any kind of business because they are just Welfare Receipt wanting to drive a truck.
Let me say again.
Perkins has to go after 5 trucks a week!
Just go to Huntingburg's yard.
All stripped down plan Jane beat-up trucks awaiting a new sucker.
Perkins buys so many trucks at a time that some trucks sit for 1 to 2 years before they can fill the seat with a sucker.

However!
People after reading this thread will still go wh0ring after a Perkins truck.
Why?
You'd never understand and Perkins feeds on your type.
You were warned.
You decided to believe the blow-butts who can say anything they want while hiding behind a computer keyboard.
You were warned again.
But you sniveling little punks are so much smarter then we who have been in the industry before your mom and dad were out of diapers.
Now pile on and do tell me how dumb I am.

Well first off lemme stand up for the rest that have a dream...Now u dumb stick haulin fool...I been in the Industry for 14 years now and i was raised in a truck my dad owned his own truck and he died in his truck..First If ur good with money and overhead.if u live on a min pay check and dont spend ur time in a truckstop..You can make it in most lease purchase programs....But be sure the road paved is a bumby road...U have to set money back to compinsate for a bad week..thats where it goes to hell in a basket if u dont have money built up for a slow week then u get in a hole...now this is wher everyone goes deep in the bucket...cause the next week they made enough to pay there fuel/truckpayment.but yet they still need that 600.00 paycheck or better cause they think they earned it..Well me being a used to be bizz man.i thought the same thing it doesnt work that way...but i tell u 1 thing i made all kinds of money..lol...But me being the hard headed guy i am come tax time i found out real fast that i messed up....now I have been aproved with Perkins for there lease option 2 buy...Will i just jump into it NO...Am i a hillbilly lol Hell yes i am and i have all my teeth never drawed unemployment never sued anyone never claimed workers comp....so ur theory of a dumb hillbilly with no teeth is a crock of #### just like a lot of things in ur life i am sure of...But who am i to speculate of ones background!..now I agree with alot of newbies do not look into it well enough before going into it cause the cloud of being a billybig riger rings way louder in ther mind then the full conclusion of it all...So to look into it deeper I Hopped into the old Ford yeah Old ford 1979 to be exact...with only 62k on it....Thats my pride other than the Son..!So upon Arrivale I was greeted by a very nice Woman...then showed around the operation center.Met a few dispatchers talked to them for a min as they are bizzy...they did answer a few questions thoe wich i thought was very nice...did see oh about 8 trucks in the lot when i pulled in i was there for oh about 2 hours then as i left there were alot less trucks in the lot!..So they had some freight to move...Now u may have not lost ur A%$ in a lease purchase but I do know stick haulers usually dont run OTR....But with u being up there by ther yard I will take in ur info about there junk trucks u prolly do see them sittin i gota give that to u but for u to start profiling. IS WRONG! Be safe out on the open road

Been with Perkins going on 8 months. Happy with them. Freight rates have gone up and I get 70% of every penny they raise rates. I'm seeing rates out of Indiana over $2/mile to the drivers and this is van division. Flatbed supposedly is seeing better rates than this. Still doing some broker stuff, but I can live with that bringing home $1000/week for the last 3 weeks. Overall I am still pleased with how Perkins works. I don't sit either. Longest I had to sit was 18 hours. Not sure what those that failed at Perkins did, but I'm doing well!
-
Perkins failed! not the drivers also look at the I.R.S. when they come knocking, a $100.00 a week wait tell they get a hold of you then it might be more like $320.00 a week. Better watch Perkins they are crooks.
-
what are you talking about? Please explain.
This doesn't even make any sense!
$100 a week, $320 a week? huh?
@Ethman- those who signed on during the recession, picked a bad time to sign a lease. Simple fact was, the industry had more trucks and drivers than available freight.
I rode out the recession with Perkins. But it wasn't easy. Everybody did what they had to, to ride out the storm and survive....including Perkins.
Now rates are improving and things are getting back to normal, but its a slow process.Ethman Thanks this. -
i can see how lots of drivers that leased trucks during the recession struggled, I don't care what company you were with. a few survived and even fewer did well. now that trucking is seeing a rebound, i expect things to turn around for lease purchasers. fuel cost may slow that, but rates are good. I'm seeing on average about $1.35 to $1.45/mile at Perkins. So, I'm making close to $.50/mile some weeks. those that struggled a few years ago ought to take a look at Perkins again. I talk to a lot of drivers doing well here.
