So I have read takes on both having a permit before a school or not. I know some places actually require it, but did it make it any easier or harder for you? Also, would you test as many endorsements as you could? And my big question: I drove in the oil fields 5 years ago, haven't been in a CMV since. I've been told (by a school, hence the double-check question here) no one would hire me on just a refresher. They recommended a full, as-if-I-were-new course. Sound about right? Thanks again! This forum is great!

Some oil field companies might hire with a refresher but most likely not OTR.May as well get all endorsements and as far as permit check with whomever you go with.

I found taking the permit and endorsments easier after 2-3 days of school and videos etc
DMV books like most goverment publications talk in goverment speak instead of english
that said our school gave a discount to students that came in permit in hand
why not get all the endorsments what you think you want from trucking today will change in time
as far as refresher or full training call some company and ask . A school might just want more of your money -
I don't understand. If you drove earlier, don't you already have a CDL?

However, I'd say it would be easier to take the written tests after completing school. As an option, just take the basic knowledge/combination test to get your permit, then add whatever else you need after you pass your skills/road test and finish school (before getting the plastic printed). After completing school, you probably won't even need to study, just look over a practice test. The written tests for doubles/triples, tanker, hazmat will be a breeze at that point. If getting hazmat, get the hazmat BG check rolling before or midway through school.
Being a noob, i can't help you with the refresher/full school question. But personally, I'm interested in tankers. So I've just decided to bite the bullet and go get a year or two OTR tanker exp with a starter company and get tanker, OTR and hazmat exp all at once. Then I'll start looking at my options after getting some exp. -
Klatu, when I moved to IL, my CDL wouldn't transfer without a new road test. I didn't have a CMV to do it so I lost out. Didn't know back then I could've rented one.
