Kevin: go to DMV's website or to your DMV local office. They're your best source of info.
FWIW: if you take the general written, and all the CDL written exams (they're called written, but they're just multiple choice) that you need to take, and you do it all in one visit, then you don't have to go back. BOL. -
In CA, your permit does consist of 3 tests. General Knowledge of Commercial Vehicles (Class A or B), Combinations (Trailer - Class A) and Air Brakes (Class A or B, although not required, you will have a restriction on your permit/license if you do not pass written & skill test).
The rest are endorsement tests that you can take at the same time or add at a later time. -
ThaNks so are there three written test the general knowledge and brakesand com
-
yes...for Class A no endorsements
-
If you haven't taken your class c test in the last 6 months they will have you take that too. So General knowledge, combination, air brakes, class c plus any endorsements you want. you can miss 10 on the general and three on each of the others and still pass.

class C is the first, CDL + practice test.

...and its actually only page one of the two page class C test. Sot sure what is covered on page one vs two, but it caught me by surprise but I passed with mo problem.
