I have run many businesses and did the records, payroll and much for many more.

I am far from an unaware novice.

I am also aware that there are many ways of doing both.

Throwing money away? When it cuts down on what is getting reported to unemployment and what's getting reported for work comp? That's a mistake, and yes the trucking company is the problem because they are paying the driver less and getting a break in what they have to pay in for taxes.

For two, neither of us is a company driver NOW anyway, so not an issue for us. HOWEVER, ALL drivers should be aware of this, have it fully explained by the company, and have the option to NOT take it. It should not be mandatory. The driver should have the choice.

I am not telling you how to run your business. You have your mind all made up. I offer my advice to those that do not have a clue.

So, if you are now self-employed, how do you feel about paying un-employment taxes that YOU, NOW, CAN NOT EVER receive?

    Just so you know.

Self employed do not pay unemployment taxes on their income.

    Lilbit Thanks this.

I fully understand that, but if they paid into un-employment for years working for some one else, and then for say 5 years ran there own company, and went broke, can they go back and collect un-employment?

I already know the answer, but I would like to hear it from you.

    Thanks Stan

In order to draw unemployment, they have to have qualified employment during recent years.

If you already knew the answer, then why make a dumb comment about unemployment taxes paid by a self employed. The taxes paid in the past as employees were not paid by them either.

    Lilbit Thanks this.

You misread/understood what I was getting at, they paid into when they were employed, as self-employed they can no longer gain the benefit of that money that they paid in, correct?

Being self employed has many advantages that far exceed this piddly worry.
