    The article says he was less than a mile from a runout ramp, if he would have kept his head he probably would have walked away without a scratch.

    At 22 years old it's hard to keep your head in a frantic, scary, and wildly different scenario;
    this approach apparently seemed the only way out?
    A seasoned individual with many rodeo's under their belt would think twice and hunker down.
    Someone already said, steer - drive it till it don't drive no more.

    My sincerest Condolences to his family and friends, and RIP Driver.

    cybill234, magoo68 and Lepton1 Thank this.

    Can't be true. All the time here on TTR, people say that only drivers at megas do stupid crap and "hood drivers are the best and safest".

    You are absolutely correct, my Navajo "soggy shrub" friend. Sorry for my mix-up.

    (Didn't know that was the meaning of Kemosabi until a moment ago.)
    My sincerest Condolences to the Passenger.
    I did read the article. Really.
    I can read readin' - just can't read wrightin'.

    BrKe adjustment is good but a good driver does not need much brakes at all. Proper gear and jakes will hold the truck all the way down. Unfortunately most would gamble an extra half hour just to get more distance. That’s too bad

    This was almost 30 years ago in a FLD with no jake. I was pulling an ancient 48 footer with manual slack adjusters that hadn’t been adjusted in quite a while. My laziness almost got me killed. The only thing doing any braking with 47k of popcorn in the wagon was the tractor.

    I started out as I normally would, stab braking, letting it get no faster than 25 mph. Didn’t take very long before the brakes were done and the engine was screaming to be upshifted.

    Luckily, there wasn’t very much traffic and guys at the bottom on the radio were telling me it was clear... let ‘er roll. I used all three lanes and cut the apex off the curves as best I could.

    Hitting the bottom with the speedo buried, I coasted a hell of a long ways trying to cool the brakes enough so they hopefully wouldn’t start a fire before stopping on the shoulder. I grabbed my 9/16 wrench beside the seat and went back and adjusted the trailer brakes... something I should have done at the top of the hill.

    cybill234, magoo68, Lepton1 and 4 others Thank this.
