Hey guys/gals,
Really hoping someone has some experience or advice on this. Ive Been an O/O for about 18 months. I Do not own my truck yet.
I'm going to need a major surgery soon with a recovery time of 6-8 months. Ive pretty much assumed and accepted,i will lose my truck. I can live with that as theirs always another truck out there.
my concern is that as an owner operator, I don't believe I can collect disability since I am the company correct?. so i'm concerned about being able to pay my every day bills for that length of time.
Wondering if theirs a secondary insurance or...?..that would provide some type of income. reason i ask about Aflac..or similar is there slogan " if you get hurt and miss work, it wont hurt, to miss work"
has anyone been in this type of situation and what,if anything can I do? I can continue to Run for awhile to cover taxes and save money, but thats a long time to be without Any income so any thoughts or tips, suggestions would be appreciated
personal,secondary insurance/ Aflac?

SSdI is about one million cases behind versus about 600 admin law judges reviewing and making final determinations on applications. SS is hiring 500 more. The average wait for the hearing in front of a law judge in SSdI is about 605 days. There is a news article from today online about that problem. This paragraph is just a summary.
You probably will be repaired in surgery and will be able to return to trucking after 8 months or however long it takes you to recover. So SSDI will deny you. It is not temporary income. It's a pernament disability for those who cannot work again or adapt to other jobs and will probably will result in either death or pernament disability.
Some programs within the state reviews and submit to SSdI appropriate cases.
Now.
Your health insurance. If you had something a policy etc, and got a surgery coming up, Im real shaky but you generally have been paying on that for some time and elective surgeries usually need approval. Secondary insurance wont work in this case. Especially if you tell them that you are fixing to be out of work almost a year when applying.
If this is a elective surgery, save your money until you have enough to meet your basic needs food, rent etc for one year. Then go get it done.
If this is a surgery done becuase there is a trauma, medical emergency need or some urgent problem that is life threatening etc and you are covered? Great. If you do not as happened to a friend of mine who did not carry health insurance, he was billed one week in Trauma of Baltimore at about 100K total. My own mother after a liver transplant and 45 Days in ICU etc was killed by something entirely different, despite a veteran related coverage etc the bill came to a cool 245K for that entire 45 day period there.
Me? Im already SSdI that means medicare. If I went to have a heart valve replaced, that's about 130K, 20% of which of that is mine. There is no point. Hospice would be cheaper and easier when it's time. The Govt will take care of that at that time.
The only thing left is that if you cannot work at all after a surgery, you might collect some unemployemnt for 6 months max. 26 weeks. I don't know if you will qualify if this is a fix it or a elective surgery.
You might have to forget surgery and keep working until something does break and you need a cutter to work on you within the hour. Hopefully you will be saving until that day. Or it might be something you might have to carry until death, something that is not exactly fixable or replaceable. Most people have something wrong somewhere and they continue to do their best even if it is not trucking anymore like I do.
I said enough. The American medical system is easiest when you have cash money to cover the costs associated with whatever work you are about to incur on it. And then the recovery time of 8 months.
It is also very easier for me to see where you are if you disclosed the medical condition or defect that you want that surgeon to be fixing. There are a number of medical websites that you can put into your data and it will give you decent data odds on your success. Or odds against your surviving the table. One of my relatives have 4 things that will kill her. She's 88 or 89. The doctors would like to try to cut and improve her life. But there is no point because any of the 4 problems she has will kill her on the table. So.. she carries on.
See where I am going with this? -
.... Aflac / Unum / etc are all good choices. If its a pre exsisting condition they will probably deny coverage though.
Instead of losing your truck ... why not hire an employee? -

I looked into AFLAC when I was getting ready to buy my truck. Back then, they wouln't take you on as an independent...had to be payroll deducted and the employer had to have a certain number of employees. Once you were set up, you could keep the plan and go off and do your own thing, but they wouldn't start a new policy for you on your own.

@x1Heavy ....your post above was very depressing...

Im going out standing with boots on if I see it coming. More likely than not what I don't see will get me. Ive a good run, a fabulous run in life. The next few years will be awesome.
There has been many doctors in the last 10 years or so, some were good, others fired. I don't sit and mope around depressed. You taint do that. No. Not allowed.
What's really nuts is when there is sunshine and positive thinking from me, people think omg he's off the reservation, get im. (High or something...)
