Ok so i am new and i know reposts are always a no-no on forums but I couldnt find exactly what i wanted to post so crossing my fingers Im not pissing anyone off with a new thread....
I am a 25 yr old girl, i look like I am 15 but I am a safety director for a family owned trucking company. Ive been doing this for 10 years. I ALSO do local and all reefer dispatch. I drug test/ permit/license/do quarterlies you name it. What I have noticed time and time again as people come into my office wanting a driving job (did I mention I hire/fire too?) is that owner operators esp new ones have no idea what they are getting into...which states require special tax reports filed, what records to keep, how to comply with drug testing regs etc.....I know all this stuff because its the only thing Ive ever done. I want to open my own business and help owner operators get on their feet. All the questions you have I can answer or find the answer because Ive been there done that. I know that there are a lot of big companies that offer this service but I have been searching and dont see a lot of more personal type companies that do this service. Can I get some advice on if this idea is worth the time or not?

To be honest, i would not pay for a service. I got all my information from truckers forum and the internet. I have my own authority did all my filings. The only thing i cant do is taxes. just my .02

I did everything myself as well, except for the BOC-3. I file my own IRP, 2290, IFTA quarterlies as well as the States I run that also have returns. Only thing I don't do is my income taxes. I have a CPA for that.
I do know that there are guys out there that either don't want the hassle of obtaining their own Authority or don't understand the process. They use these services to get it done for them. Do a google search and you'll see there's a ton a companies providing this service. Your idea might be OK, just need to market it correctly. Don't know if there's any requirements for you in order to do this for folks either. -
I personally think you have a great idea, based on the fact that "smaller" companies offer personalized service would probably be the best marketing angle. Emphasize (as you did) 10 yrs experience in the industry so potential drivers o/o's have confidence in your ability. I see pros and cons, many would prefer to do it themselves to save money - as stated by previous o/o. However, if I were to decide to go back and buy my own truck again, I'd be more likely to hire someone to do the paperwork end of it for convenience.
Either way - I wish you BEST OF LUCK! I was somewhat in the same position of deciding if I want to open a different service business for o/o's when I worked for a previous company, so I know where you are coming from. Desire to help and serve, combined with your honesty will help you succeed if there is a need in the market. Hope you do fantastic, and keep supporting our independent truckers - they work hard and deserve our support! -
Only problem I see is that "own authority" O/O's are a relatively small market and kinda "hard core". They tend to be alot more "wait and think about it" than most truckers. So they're gonna be hard to convince that your service is what they need/want. There's a whole lot of scammers and fly by nighters out there promising the same "goods" you have to offer and these truckers have a whole lot to lose. Gonna take a good while to get their trust.
Suggest you start out doing this "on the side" until you get a couple of clients for awhile. They will be your best advertizement. -
