Oh and another thing I have learned

"The Paccar MX uses the same basic block as the MB4000. In fact both come from a foundry in South America. DAF buys the block from the same place MB got the MBE4000 block. For the record, Navistar MaxxForce also uses the same block purchased by MAN from South America."

Maybe you already knew this, but just another fact people should take a look at. Like I said. Look at an MBE and a MX side by side. This would explain the similarities.

From 2012-10-15 until 2012-10-19 we are looking for a driver with a Peterbilt 386 with original MX Paccar-Motor (year of manufacture of truck may NOT be before 2010!) and fully loaded trailer. We will be located in Salt Lake City and are going to install the necessary very small cameras and sensor units in and around the truck there to do some testing. The driver would be required to drive our specialists around the state of Utah for a week. Please get in contact with us via private message here if you have time in the specified period and if your truck meets our requirements OR if you know someone who does. Thank you for your cooperation.

As far as the bigger is better theory why is it a 12.7 detroit will out perform a 14l 290 Cummins or a 14l 310 Cat? And as far as no one makes a 15l 550hp engine what about the 15l ISX Cummins or the 16l volvo/mack engine? After owning and driving most everything I'll tell you Cats are overated just like Peterbilts and Harley Davidsons. yes they're decent but they're not superior by any means. Technology has a way of changing the rules what made sense once may not in the future. A good example would be the 6.7 Cummins in ram pick ups it makes350 hp and 800ibs torque while the Cummins 220 the most popular engine in big trucks back in the 50s and 60s made 220 hp and 620 lbs of torque from 743 cube abot 12 litres.

Notice this post from 2011. Has the situation improved in 2012 MX engines?

I would say no. MX Engines are actually made in Europe by DAF. DAF will always have DAF issues. Does the Paccar system have the full capability to deal with this new engine that they have fielded? I say NO WAY. Took Freightliner 5 years to get their service network up to speed to support their first Mercedes Product the MBE4000.

Do you really want a DAF motor? Do you think it will ever be the same as having a CAT motor with an entire network of CAT dealers to support you?

I dont think so.

our dealership sold 13 to a fleet equiped with ultra shift tranny. the other mx tech and i thought you dumb ###! they are well over a year old, and they use them to haul chips to the mills. they all came in for a 40,000 tune up, one has been in for a coolant module to be replaced i found a hole in the casting, another came in for low oil pressure. i found that the filter from fleetguard rotates in the wrong direction and had made the lower bearing back out of the housing, i replaced the oil module on this one. out of 13 trucks these are the actual failures they have had. yes they have all had software updates, heatshields, and fuel line dampes installed too. the customer has orderd another 30 trucks. on other trucks we have seen turbo failures, ecm's egr coolers, and yes 3 ventalated block's. I hate the engine support, or the fact that i cant just type in a new value for a customer parameter change. i have had trouble shooting steps lead me down the wrong road for repairs to which engine support did not understand why i did not need to replace the part that i was told to replace. i had to get an mx engineer to explain it to him on why the troubleshooting steps were wrong, he agreed but 6 months later the procdure has not been changed. I hate to see them pull into the shop for repairs. i try to have a good attitude towards the engine but lack of support from paccar makes it hard. to be fair the repairs i have done to this engine are the same repairs to any other engine. they are like a volvo engine they do not have that many internal failures. IMO

daf105paccar Thanks this.
