what year model? but either way 386, I would not have a 387, this coming from a former peterbilt mechanic, due to the 387's wiring and control module and bs brain boxes, and the fact they are wired totally different than any other pete. if we're talkin pre 08 I would go with a cat but if you are talking new(why anyone would want a new truck is beyond me, just my .02) I would go with a cummins ISX, just my .02

I was looking at getting a 387 too. What kind of wiring issues and on what years?
-
all of them especially the 1st few years they were out 2001-2003? but none of the wiring has changed since it was introduced. The brain box behind the glovebox, the wiring from it to the guages, guages are all daisy chained off each other, all the connectors are prone to corrosion under the hood and firewall, the truck has 3miles of wire behind the dash. trust me the 387, especially if buying used would be my last choice.
Magnum1 Thanks this. -

Lotsa people have a built in bias against the 387. mostly for asthetics, but the best truck for anyone is one theyll spend time in. parked trucks make no money. that being said once you get used to how wiring is laid out in any truck, diagnostics is easier. what ever you have , get to know it. if you arent a diy er then youre at the mercy of every mechanic you meet.
