I'd say everyone understands that part. That don't mean they have to agree with it though.

Even the judge said that if he had the ability to use the disscession of the court he would have handed down a sentence of 20 years... But the mandatory minimum for the charges he was convicted of was 110 years.

Exactly. He even admitted after the crash , that he chose to close his eyes and steer into the stopped traffic. He deserves to die the same horrible death that his victims did.

Every media outlet has to perform some editing function, unless they publish the trial transcripts in their entirety, have gavel to gavel coverage of the entire trial. And even then, as a veteran of 2 trials where I was foreman on both, there is no substitute for actually being in the courtroom.

There is no such thing as "read everything about this situation" Everyone has read heavily edited pieces brought to you by journalists, filtered through editors distilled to the final product you see on TV, read on the internet, watch on YouTube. And every one of those steps allows some sort of bias to shade the content.

When this driver said he closed his eyes

My impression of his action at that point was his resignation that he was going to die and there was nothing he could do about it. His adrenaline was probably preventing him from thinking about any escape plan. His vision had narrowed to what he saw in front of his hood and he didn't want to see what he was doing. Meaning: watch cars and people get ran over

It’s amazing how people lightly talk about this. For the older folk imagine where you were and the problems you had to face 25 years ago. 25 years is almost his entire life I believe. All the time he spent living is going to have to be served again but in prison. By the time he’s out he’ll be institutionalized. I understand lives were lost and justice must be served but he didn’t intentionally do it. This incident happened because of his lack of knowledge and experience. A lot of it is to blamed on the person that trained him, the person that allowed him to get a CDL knowing he doesn’t speak fluent English or even read it. The owner of the truck for giving a rookie a beat down truck. Just a recipe for disaster. In my opinion 25 years is ample time for the kid to serve and everyone else that had a hand in this should be doing 5-10 years.

In Japan they have the blowfish that they make into sushi. It’s highly poisonous if it’s not prepared exactly right. It is traditional for the sushi chef to fall on his sword and commit suicide if he kills one of his customers. Apparently it happens about once or twice per year on average and today all of the sushi chefs have honored their vowed to take their own life if they take a customers by accident.

Just a comparison to think about regarding this case. This guy had Multiple other options other than slamming into the back of the vehicles at the bottom of the hill. And he chose none of them.
