May be relocating to the DC/Virginia/Maryland area next spring with my military spouse. I'm trying to get a heads up on the best area to reside in for any opportunities hauling Gas. Can someone who has been in the area give me some info on where the bulk of the fuel terminals are located, and some of the tanker companies that are dominant in that neck of the woods. I hear the traffic is brutal, and would like to be in an area where the commute is somewhat tolerable.
Thanks much.

Have fun LOL, I hate the traffic around Denver during rush hours. Couldn't imagine driving in that part of the country. If I had to, I would look I into running a night shift. The ranks down in Denver get slammed during the day, but being on nights, I may have to wait on a truck already loading, and most times I am able to just pull on in with no wait.

Depending on where you will be living, it seems like the trucks running out of Alexandria, Va are getting paid more then the ones coming out of Baltimore, Md. Try looking up Quest, Coraluzzo, Carroll, Fleet transit, or Baltimore tank lines. Kenan also has a big presence out here. If you don't mind running regional you might be happier at Dana or Superior carriers. Both have terminals in Baltimore. Would be chemical, not petroleum work.

Back in the late 80's I was stationed in southern Maryland and I checked the gas companies there and was shocked. The pay was so low it was unbelievable. That area was the only place I've lived that the wages were low and the cost of living was high. Everything was fix by the wages in Washington D.C. Stay on the VA side and I'm sure your do better.

I can't really help for two reasons. It's been so long ago things might have changed. I sure hope so because the pay was the worse. All the places I've been to in the military it always works out. Either pay is low and the cost of living is also low or, The pay is great but the cost of living is up there too. So you really have to be careful and know what the costs are. IIRC, back then a company named Southern Maryland Oil ran just about everything on the Maryland side. I don't know if you have a choice or not but if it were me I'd do some more studying to find a better job.
When I retired from the service I too looked at places and ended up in Las Vegas NV. There's a lot of good points there. The biggest was we got paid L.A. CA. wages. The area was cheap to live. It's been the only place where I've seen it like that. Things were great until ARCO pull the rug out along with their truck. The trick is to find a place you'll really like the make a go at it. There's nobody here or anywhere that can tell you where to live. So good luck and look way down the road and try to see what it may be in 15, 20 years from now.sprizo Thanks this. -
