So, I've read a few long threads about being out on the road, and calling dispatch or your DM or FM. Not sure if many of the threads I've read are just from complainers or if it's just part of being OTR. Is it normal to be on hold anywhere from a few minutes to an hour before you get someone on the line? Does this jack up your cel bill, or are you calling in on an 800 number? Calling plans I've seen for Verizon that should work for OTR look like the cost is about $75 a month.
How much is your cell phone bill every month due to calls in to the company?
Phone calls into dispatch or DM etc

Doesn't matter if it's an 800 Number..most Cell Phones work by minutes.
I never really get put on Hold, they just don't answer the phone sometimes.
And I've got an Older Verizon Plan...so we (Wife and I) get 10 Free Numbers.
My Work/Dispatch Number is one of those.
My Bill is expensive. -
Many of the big companies want their drivers to rely on Qualcomm as the primary means of communication. DM's typically have 60 drivers under their management, so if every driver is trying to get on the horn then it becomes a nightmare. I only call my DM if an issue is becoming complicated or is really a time sensitive thing. However, I've noted that Qualcomm can resolve most issues and gives the added bonus of having a written record of whatever was said.
I've had wait times that have lasted 30 minutes or more, especially when they are on night shift or if the day shift is just getting into the saddle. Sometimes while on hold I'm firing away on the Qualcomm and the problem is resolved without talking to anyone. However, there are times when talking to a DM is critical. -
Well, my cell bill is unlimited cell, unlimited long distance, and unlimited text for $25 a month, I do believe that would be hard to beat have my home support unit (wife) LOL on the same plan.
I have it tied in with a Blue Parrot head set ( $49.00 on line refurnished ) so being on hold is not a problem.
And if they have to get a hold of me when I may be out of range I have peoplenet in the cab (electronic logs ).
So I keep my cost way down for unlimited phone usage but they can also get a hold of me when I am out in the boonie's. This equals more money in my pocket. And they just started this month giving us a $30. a month for using our personal phones-so minus -$30. on a +$25 personal phone bill equals +5. bucks extra in my pocket every month. Dam I work for a good Company. Lucky Dog=LOL
This little set up works great no cell phone contract, and when being on hold, the head set helps a lot.
I am lucky, the Co I work for is great, I think the longest I have been on hold has been 5 min. They are staffed right-
Just my 2 centsNavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Walmart straighttalk plan, $45 per month, unlimited. Be careful of the phone you pick there...different phones use different towers. My smart phone used sprint, works awful out west. Use the old dumb phone and Verizon towers, much better coverage.

Check with AT & T, family plan with rollover minutes. It is expensive for us because we have 3 phone lines, and 2 internet air cards, I go over on GB a lot (have 10 GB). But the coverage for cell phone is good. Most phones have to have the data fee on them, and can add text messaging if you use that a lot.

If I am on hold for more than 5-10 minutes, I hang up and call back in a few.

With 50 drivers in their harem, you calling in and the other 49 as well, with B.S. questions and trying to josh around.....well, you can see, it takes up a lot of time. Use the Q.comm. I once had a trailer stolen from the house, and called on the phone. all communication was done VIA the Q.comm.

I have unlimited everything through Verizon which runs me $180/month. My dispatcher usually answers very quickly. After waiting 5minutes or so I hang up because that usually means she's on a smoke break. I have one the the old Qualcomms with only 2 line limit of what to say and the company kinda prefers you call in its something long.
