    Hey all!

First post from a new graduate.

I have a local company that appears willing to take a chance on me as a “clean up” driver in my area working about 30 hours a week. Good reputation and nice equipment and they tarp most everything. I also have a conditional offer on the table from Schneider for the local Walmart distribution center working as a flex. Sounds strictly hook and drop; repeat.

My story is that I am retired after 25 years in the fire service. I am here by choice not necessity as I love operating any and all equipment. I know how to work and am not afraid of it.

My concern is that both of my knees and one shoulder have had previous surgery. I am 46 and in relatively decent health otherwise, yet I don’t want to burn my body out on this in 2-3 years if flatbed is that demanding.

Thoughts and opinions appreciated. Thank you in advance!

First off, thank you for your service.

What does this local company haul mostly? See, there’s a huge difference in how difficult a tarp job is. Stuff like roofing materials sit low to the deck, and is flat and you can cover them with smaller tarps. If they’re hauling lumber, that’s much more difficult. Steel plate is easy.

They pay a percentage of the load’s value. From what I can determine the money ain’t bad.

Steel plate or structural steel? Coils are easy.

You will know what’s needed, put your oil racks and lumber on the deck, protectors, chains and binders, while you’re waiting to back in the bay. 1 smalltarp and a couple straps.
You go into the bay, they drop the coil, you secure your chains, roll the tarp (it’s not heavy) out and cover the coil, secure the corners of the tarp and pull outside. Finish tarping and you’re out in 10-15 minutes easy pace.

If you take your time and don't try to "Rush" its not too demanding- It's actually a good solid workout which in turn keep you in better health.

An Hour or 2 at each source- Shipper and consignee- Put you in good shape.

Tell you what- I'm turning 50 soon- I feel Better Now hauling Flat work-Than I did in my 20's pulling a van.

I always go by.... 4' and under on height.... at any length/width is easy.

Item descriptions are everything in flatbedding IMO.

Don't jump up and down off the bed. Move slowly and carefully. Never ever fall off the bed.

And that is also what I am looking to hear. I was still able to bust my ### at the fire dept pretty good, enough so to keep up with the young kids on the fire scenes. So I know I can still do it. Like anything though, the majority of information put out there is typically of the negative sort. I didn’t know if it was some Herculean skill set that only young men could do?

I am riding with them tomorrow and another day and that will give me a pretty good idea I imagine.

    Thanks for the reply!
