The vultures will come to your school to hire you, correct? I am in a position of either having a family member lending me the money for the state school ($1400 for 3 months) or having the state employment dept pay for a 3 week $4900 school.
So if I get out of school I really would prefer not going to work for the meanies out there. Maybe find a little more money than say USA Truck or PAM.
I am 4 miles South of I-40 near Nashville TN. I-24 and I-65 is just a rocks throw away.
I am wondering if it is different getting on with a company when they didn't pay for your schooling. Do you get treated better?
I want to run solo, but go with a company that does teams incase my sweetie decides to go to school.
I doubt my previous experience matters. I drove trailer trucks back in the early 80's. Never OTR. I did haul some fuel.
Thanks in advance!![]()

Hey Rug Trucker. Many companies do send recruiters to schools. I don't think you so much as get hired from these visits, as you listen to their speach and if you are interested in their company, the school can give you their application and fax it for you after you fill it out. At least that is what I've gathered so far, I've been in school for a week and have seen one recruiter with four more coming next week.
Don't go with the company paid schools, like what USA Truck has. You will be trapped into working for them if you aren't happy there, or you will be responsible for their tuition + other fees. USA Truck does seem to be a good company to drive for, I just wouldn't want to be locked in by an expensive contract like that.
If you are unemployed, or underemployed, the employment program for school is pretty good. That is how I'm paying for school, and my course is five weeks. That's another thing, length of course is important. Alot of schools are only three weeks, and after my first week of a five week course, I couldn't imagine what a three week course would be like. This week has been packed with information and tests getting us ready for the cdl permit tests (which I passed today! YEA!!).
There is alot of good information on this board and I'm sure there will be others popping up with their opinions. One thing I have figured out...no matter what direction you decide to go with what company, the most important thing is attitude. A positive attitude will get you far, and get you through the tough times when you may find yourself sitting at a truckstop waiting for a load.
Good Luck!
PS. Are you the same Rug Trucker from Moparts? -
I had a chauffer's license back in the late 80's. I drove 10 wheel staight trucks, concrete, block, dump. Went to a '81 R686ST Mack and pulled a 38Ft flat bed hauling sod. Went from there to pulling jet fuel and AVGAS.
In SWFL you could make more money digging a ditch than driving a truck back then. Not much OTR stuff down there either.
That was back in the first days of the CDL. I took the written test and passed no problem. Just because I wasn't driving for a living at the time, I would have had to rent a truck and do the driving test.
I let my license go.
Never did double clutch...........
What is this Moparts you speak of?

If you're looking for a trucking job nowadays, I'm sure you've found out it's a whole new can of worms. Even with your previous experience, there isn't a company that will even consider you without school training. I've heard alot of them will make you take a refresher course if you've been out for 1 year. I filled out a couple job applications today for different companies to see what I can get. I got them through the school so I know they do hire students. They also have training programs where you drive with a trainer for a few weeks to gain experience before they let you loose on the open road by yourself. They both look like really good companies, but one seems to pay better than the other. I think I would consider myself lucky to get on with either one.
Tomorrow starts week two at Napier. I'll actually have one day off because I passed my permit tests yesterday. But I'm sure we'll have more tests to take in class this week. I don't think I've ever taken so many tests before in my life!
Small place indeed! Maybe we need to get ourselves some new screennames...
