As an employee and as a lease op with my own truck, I have taken both friends and family and a few people who were in distress, no needless randoms though. There are situations where a guy would rather have been 5 mins up the road, but you weren't. And now you can help.....or keep driving and wonder.
Both under the radar and out in the open, I've never had a problem. It sucks how something that shouldn't be a big deal, is.
Picked up a hitchhiker annnd got randomly inspected.

Back before cell phones, you would often hear someone on the CB asking for a ride to the nearest exit that might have a phone or a shop. I never minded stopping to give a driver in distress a ride. I always figure that what goes around, comes around and I knew if I needed help another truck would stop.

Back before cellphones, we were all packing heat. Most drivers back then were actually decent people. And there were still areas in the country that, had no services, like gas stations and truck stops. If someone got stranded because their vehicle stopped, they were part of the food chain. In fact, I’ve had truckers going the opposite way call out to me on the CB to tell me about a broken down car or truck and ask if I could assist. No problem hand. In bad weather, you would have an entire family riding in your truck...you couldn’t just leave them.
Nowadays, the States is chocked full of weirdos, and irresponsible people and losers who refuse to trip plan. And thieves and con artists and scammers. And remember, if anyone accuses you of anything, a trucker is automatically guilty in the eyes of any jury.jfred2, rookietrucker, AModelCat and 9 others Thank this. -
Those days are long gone. I have stopped when another on the CB has said such is such is up ahead, you didn't think twice, especially if an accident. Now, just keep rolling. And yes, I have always carried in the truck. SadTripleSix Thanks this.

Everyone thinks the world is more dangerous today than it was in the fifties.
America has never been safer than it is today.
This paranoia is killing us. If you see a chance to do a good deed, you should do it.RedRover, jfred2, TruckChicken and 8 others Thank this. -
This topic is something my friends and I talk about a good bit. In concept I agree with your opinion. This 24 hour news cycle is reporting things today that years ago would not made news. However opinions differ on this.

The odds of you being a victim of violence have never been lower in the history of humanity than they are right at this very second.

Hopefully you will never have a hitcher in your truck and have a major accident. Just the legal liability alone from the hitcher and/or family could run into the millions. And yes, it has happend.
