What's the meaning of "You get to pick your own lanes" mentioned in adds for TT companies?

some over the road (OTR) trucking companies have somewhat specific areas or "lanes" where they run. if you live near by or in that lane, your chances of a job are better. sometimes "picking your lanes" could also mean you can choose which areas you want to travel, but however be aware that this might make you getting home a bit difficult as they would have to find freight going by your house.

If you don't live within a few miles of the lanes your company runs good luck getting home...

In essence, it means you can pick what part of the country you want to run in. For instance, you prefer the N.West or the S. West and request loads going and coming in those areas.

Yes, it's at times and at that we mean a LOT of times a fantasy a recruiter will use to get you in the door EXCEPT if you tell them you'll do the NE and especially NYC! Then you're set! But a large amount of the time you might not get a "lane" so to speak. Now some companies will do the west coast, or the NW or SE but the lane part is the route taken mostly, an Interstate highway or a major 2 or 4 lane road going to out of the way areas.

One thing a lot of you newbies need to know is if you live in BFE or way out in the middle of say North Dakota, or The Rockies where you need a jeep to get home or ride a mountain goat or in the middle of a desert you'll spend a ot of time in the truck and none at home as stated before if a company can't get you freight home or close to it home time is going to be very rare!
IF you are a single person with no home payment (mortgage) or ties to an area then you have the option of moving to somewhere close to your yard. If you and the wife get along better from a distance then you have no problem with staying away. But if you have that happy life then maybe this just isn't the job for you as absence does NOT make the heart grow fonder except for Jody who comes calling!
Anyway "LANES" and getting to choose them is a BS lie to get you in the door of that company! You will not get them right off the bat until they know you are reliable, live close enough to a lane to get you home without costing THEM fuel and money to do so.

This is where I always advocate that you drive yourself to orientation and leave the ride there so if it's the only way you get home then you're set and the company might enjoy this arrangement and you'll get home.
