Last month was a $49 credit.

 

Has NOTHING to do with MPG per say. You need to balance your fuel buying by STATE. A low fuel price in one state does not equate to the road tax charged per mile in another state. Example; you buy 100 gallons of fuel in say Indiana and they tax the fuel at .50 cents per gallon that gives you a 50.00 bank. So let's say you drive 200 miles in Indiana and they charge .05 cents per mile you now have spent 10.00 of your bank. Leaving you 40.00. Now you drive 500 miles in good ole IL they charge .25 per mile that's 125.00 so now you owe IL 85.00 because you didn't fuel in there state. These numbers are not real but used to show how IFTA works. My IFTA when I started was always 150.00 ish now I fuel just one side and I owe 20 to 40 per month max. For the guys getting a credit use above example in reverse. Hope that helps.
