Actually just looked up this number and seeing it as 49, so not sure where I got the 55 number from.
the problem is, though, that the number continues to get larger. Biggest concern being that the industry is about to see a huge drop off of drivers due to retirement, and the young folks have no interest in the profession.
Edit: ATA has the age at 49, Bureau of Labor Statistics has the age at 55

Again, just by going off personal observation..i think those numbers are skewed to all commercial drivers. My encounters with private fleets, food service, and ltl companies are rare. They also tend to have a lot less newbies. I run into more of the typical otr guys when I'm at a truck stop getting fuel otr parking for the night. and the meltons, mavericks, and tmcs of the world at shippers and recievers. Of the latter group i feel old. And look older lol.SingingWolf Thanks this.

I did some additional reading on this after posting a few minutes ago. The area where they pointed their concern was drivers age 55 and over. Can't remember the time span, whether it was in one year, or over a longer period, but the percentage of drivers age 55 and older has climbed from 20% to 26%. No matter how you look at it, that is an alarming trend.
in the short term, at least, I think all this minimum wage raising will only make this worse.freightwipper Thanks this. -
Sfi had no choice but to act...your documentation of all the issues basically put them into a corner...TennMan Thanks this.

I’m somehow thinking the average age of professional drivers is inversely proportional to the collective IQ of the industry....

I think some of these rates some guys on here are saying they're being offered are a bit exaggerated lol but her what do I know lol

Nope, not one bit.
Plus did you see the post where DAT said Van Load to truck ratio broke their all time record on elog week?
You can get big money even out of Florida and Colorado at this point, that's how crazy things are.TennMan Thanks this. -
Of course you do. Because you, like a lot of the rest of us have been screwed by companies got so long we believe $2 a mile is good money & freight paying higher is very rare. It's just not the case when you get away from these companies & cut out the middle man. And for now the rates are through the roof as they always are when a major change hits the industry. That's why it's hard to believe these guys but they are telling the truth.drvrtech77, SingingWolf, TennMan and 2 others Thank this.

Lol I never said$2a mile was good money or bad money.. Everybody with their own authority doesn't succeed.. If that was the case it would be no Landstar or Mercer. Or even Schneider. It's what you make it.. You can make a great living off of $2a mile all miles if you know what you doing.. that $4 a mile freight is great but it's not consistent.. Give me my consistent $2-$2.50 a mile anyday over the $4 a mile here or there
