Yeah Florida is... what it is.
It's tough just to get a good company driver job down there.

Schneider doesn't make any money with you deadheading around and Florida especially south of Jacksonville is awful!
There's better rates coming out of Colorado vs Mid to Southern Florida.. that's how bad it is.

In general it doesn't if you figure your deductions right when you fill out the W4. Now the actual calculation number on the W4 form is messed up and the IRS knows that but won't change it. It's really a trail and error in picking the right number of exemptions.

As for the otr drivers getting per diem, you are correct we do qualify for per diem everyday we are away from home. That's nothing special since per diem is available for anyone that travels for work like sales people. Just for the company guys, be careful when you claim the per diem because most carriers give you that amount usually as a cpm that doesn't get taxed. Just calculate what your per diem should be when you do your taxes at the end of the year and subtract what your carrier took out already. But that only applies to those company drivers that are told where to go. Us choice drivers just get to calculate how many days away we were and multiple that by this year's per diem rate and take 80% of that number off our taxable income :)

Does Schneider have many loads out of the Jacksonville area since that will be my base?

Dunno what "decent" is. That's different for everybody.
It's not a bad area and it's not a great area.. just okay.
