Yes of course I mean all we do is deliver everything everyone uses.
EVERYTHING.
So we are classified as unskilled labor..so anyone can do our job.
Many people actually think that.
And then there is regulation that is the biggest problem with our industry.
We are over regulated more than any other Job Field..and the country DEPENDS on us for ALL of the goods/services that make this country what is.
Where's our thanks?
Teachers always screaming about being under paid..yeah ok..get in line.
As for going to college..they CHOSE that option.
Just like us.
The Majority of us are away from home and family doing our jobs so our ''betters'' can look down their nose's at us.
So we all can whine about being underpaid together..EQUALLY.

I think it is totally off base to suggest that teaching should pay more than trucking, simply due to the time spent in college. Then again, I guess if we just gave everyone free college and government support to take care of themselves the entire time they were there, you might have a point.
College isn't/wasn't in the cards for everyone out of high school. Before we entered this mentality of living with mommy and daddy until age 30, most were forced to get out of the house and support themselves after high school. Some even chose to go serve their country, which is far more valuable than any college degree, IMO.
And I won't even get into the difference in hours of work per year involved in trucking vs. being a teacher.91B20H8, PoleCrusher, CaptainDaveG and 3 others Thank this. -

Good teachers work 60 hours weeks. In the building at 0700, one period for prep, one period of supervision, one period lunch (which usually means prep time), done at 1530, out of building 1600. Assuming not taking work home there's an easy 45 hours without talking about IEP, grade reporting, parent communication, extra curricular activities, etc.
The "off time" in the summer is spent doing continuing education. You want it that average of $50k - better get your masters. You want top pay - get a doctorate. The degrees pay off because you are required by law to take educational opportunities to "stay current" in your field. Might as well work towards a degree.
The tighter training and education requirements are a big reason why teachers get paid more in relation to 1980. They're expected to know more, do more, and teach more students. Just look at average class size in 1980 to now.
The other reason teachers have a realivily higher pay rate now is they got organized and stayed organized. Teachers are if anything more opinionated than truckers, and the union is a flipping nightmare, but push comes to.shove and everyone pulls together.
Teaching was the hardest thing I ever did in my life. I lasted two years in a classroom and was burned out. Where I deciding who should earn more on merit teachers would be high on duty he list. Elementary teachers would top the list.oicu812, wsyrob, redoctober83 and 1 other person Thank this. -

My daughter in law is an 8th grade teacher. She makes around $39,000 per year, and is required to do after school extras, such as work concession stands for so many games a year, be an assistant coach, ect.
As for the $38,000 figure for drivers in 1980, that was before deregulation, and most ltl companies were union, and even the non-union ltl companies had to pay well to keep their drivers. OTR drivers did not make $38k at that time. I was there, and remember what I made. In 1977, I made just under $18k OTR. I drove around 100,000 miles that year. I could have stepped it up and made over $20k, but I took it easy the whole summer and cut my miles by about 500 or so per week.
That was a lot of money for that time compared to what everyone I knew made around here. Of course, I'm from the south, right in the middle of textile and furniture country at the time, so jobs didn't pay great.gentleroger Thanks this. -
