I booked myself just a couple hours earlier before that load came up.
Here's the story man.. I've never been to North, South Dakota and Montana.
I've been to all the other states. Everything isn't about every nickel and dime if it was I'd never leave the Northeast and doing all the short loads there.
It's extremely rare to have an opportunity to go someplace you've never been before as in those rare states and at a half decent rate. If it ever comes about again that actually pays okay (doesnt have to be good but just okay) I will make it happen solely to have the experience.

I've been here what 5 months?
I have NEVER seen any load going 1000+ miles paying $2+ unless it went into a terrible market.
As in Colorado, well now North Dakota and the Northeast.
Yeah you can do well staying within the Northeast but if you want to leave on the spot you're usually looking at $1 or less.
Say you take a $2 1000 mile load to NJ and from there you take a 500 mile load to Columbus, Ohio for $1.
You're now at $1.66 average getting into and leaving the Northeast.
Around the same rate as if I did that North Dakota load.. going into and leaving there.
$2+ 1000+ load are rare also and the only places I've ever seem them come from ever is either IL or WI.
This one from Ohio to North Dakota is the first of it's kind as for what I just stated.
The longer the run generally the crappier the rate is.
Never saying that North Dakota load was the best move financially if someone had the choice but the rate overall in and out of there wasn't that bad.
A Swift or TransAm flease driver would think they hit the lotto getting 1000 mile runs that paid for $1.60+ for all their miles. It's really not that bad.
Whenever I've been in the Northeast (No New England, yet to go there) I managed to escape for $1.40+ all miles BUT it's never easy. Multiple times I've ran short loads within the Northeast for over a week.. basically waiting because I refuse to take cheap freight out.
After about a week I'm nearing my breaking point though lol.
I remember I ran PA to NY and back for 11 or 12 days straight once and I was about to totally go nuts.
It was during wintertime and nothing paid anything to leave but oh man I remember that time I was my closest I've ever gotten to my breaking point of giving up and taking cheap freight out.
However right when I was about to break I got a load going from Rochester, NY to Memphis for $1600.
It was a C.H. Robbingson load (it said so on the bills) and it was very light.
The beauty about choice is the freedom to where it's all on you.
For me personally I know if I stay within an area for too long I start to flip out from seeing the same the stuff all the time. That's why local or regional work never appealed to me.
Being someplace new or I haven't been to in a long time makes for me having a much more enjoyable experience. Balancing profit and happiness is different for everybody.Last edited by a moderator: Sep 13, 2015

Every time I finish a drop and hook open window appointment load I still feel a great sense of joy.
It is a thing a beauty.
In reefer world some places were so strict they would fine you for being early, as in even 30+ minutes.
All the live loads/unloads that took forever also.
Oh how I do not miss those days...RoseMan, TransplantBadger, Dominick253 and 7 others Thank this. -
Like I said to each his own.
I know how the math works..it's just a time thing with me.
I like to maximize my time running in decent freight lanes.
As for getting out of the NE..you can do better a buck a mile getting out.
You just have to plan it and look for a way out.
But hey keep preaching about how awful the NE is..maybe it will draw out all the IC's I've seen running around.
Nothing to see here in the NE..just move along.ABRO Transport, Ssand Man, TennMan and 1 other person Thank this. -
Dogals right foot Thanks this.

I stack up the shorter loads in the mid-west and northeast and that's that.
This truck isn't moving for cheap.
Anyway I was simply saying about going out and doing something different. Haven't you ever taken a lesser rate just to simply get away from the same old same old? I'm sure we all have at some point.
Getting out of the Northeast isn't easy. I can find more 100-150 mile loads paying in the region paying $4.50+ per mile than I can find loads going west for more than $1.10.
I have gotten better than $1 every time but it involved me sticking around stealing your and Sadwar's freight for a bit until something worth me leaving pops up.
But don't worry once winter comes many many ICs will be leaving as snow is their kryptonite.
I remember during all those terrible storms I saw a load on the board paying $1.90 something from MA to IA.
Good luck ever seeing that again. -
I'm in Ohio tonight then Kentucky tomorrow.. back to Ohio the next day and then Indiana after that.
An interesting thing I saw I didn't bring up earlier was when I was in PA picking up my tractor supply load Thursday morning another IC in a older truck pulled nearly next to me.
Saw something I never saw before.. this dude had a full sized laptop hooked up in the air by some kind of pole next to him in the truck.
It was pretty much in the position my qualcomm is in my truck.
I didn't even know that kind of thing was legal...
Man.. I'm pretty much competing with ICs hitting the refresh button on the load board while driving.
Crazy.Dominick253 Thanks this. -
You say this as if you haven't done similar short cuts such as I remember you saying you booked a hi dollar load and would then find you something to get you to it awhile back.
I don't agree with either way but it is what it ain't -
[EDIT]
Found an old picture of it. RAM made the laptop mount. Had to brace it a bit to keep it from swinging around too much. Good thing the laptop had a SSD lol.
