I believe the old adage "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink" applies.

Or you can lead a steering wheel holder to good freight, but you can't make them haul it!

I really want to take a stab at this one. I'm not a great writer and this could go long but I'm going to give it a whirl realizing there is a ignore button and I will probably be talking to myself from now on.

There are some good mileage based contracts out there. Some that pay a buck a mile plus surcharge, 50 bucks for every drop or unload and dead head. It all adds up and in some cases. Some even though hard to find are much better than SNI as far as pay goes . We would be fools not to acknowledge this. I tend to think money is completely irrelevant. It's too different for everyone. Some would laugh at what I make. Whatever. I feel as though I do well.
Not many companies have the freight base to offer a % contract. I think this is missed from time.

The real draw to the program is the choice. I go where I want to go, when I want to go and at what weight. Money has very little to do with it in the end. For the life of me I can not understand why you would own your own truck and let a dispatcher decide such things. Money or not.

I was in orientation with a guy who I kept in touch with. After 10 weeks of the load board he burned out. So he finds SNI mentor who just so happens to have a wife who helps with booking loads. He hired her.150 bucks a week. She books his loads and has 8 other drivers as well. I never understood this. What's the point? After 10 months and after countless phone calls of him telling me how much money he was making he burned out again. This time he was done with SNI . Completely burned out. Last time a talked to him he was running for a local carrier in Memphis with his own truck under dispatch and loving life. Not for me but what do I know. I'm happy for him.

Long story short, some people are just not cut out for dispatching themselves. Some don't want too. That's OK as well.

If all those mileage drivers came over to choice we'd have less choice and more headaches, why keep beating the dead horse known as mileage contracts. We all know FW can't stand them and that's his right I just don't understand why this has to continue to be brought up.

It's as if it's a chicken measuring contest mileage vs. Percentage.

If any of us would admit it or not we even run on a mileage contract we just like the sound of percentage better.

There used to be a decent mileage program here at SNI, why do you think they got rid of it?

It all comes down to what works for each driver at any given time.

I run for home time and FW seems to run to see how long he can stay out.....lol

    Everyone's needs change over time.

    So to each their own.

I agree not everybody is cut out to dispatch themselves. It take a lot of mental work and planning. Plus to do well it takes a lot of homework.
What I don't agree with is a good mileage contract being $1 plus fsc, that's maybe $1.25 a mile and still relying on a dispatcher.
That is not good money nor worth all the risk and responsibility of running a truck.
But hey that's just my opinion.

driverdriver, TennMan and mxpx148 Thank this.

The only reason SNI did away with legacy is to lessen there exposure to any kind of fed ex style lawsuit. I'm not arguing but I think you would agree they have done everything possible to limit their exposure to such law suits. The key component to be considered a ic is full control of your business. This can not be said when under dispatch.
