DFO hit the nail on the head. The operator has a lot to do with how well the truck performs. I use my truck gently in all aspects. Some people are hard on things and that's why I don't want a used truck.
I would like to add that manufacturers are developing emissions technology and just about any truck built in the '09 to '12 year range tend to have major emissions systems issues.
Up until now ('16) thing have gotten much better. Although I believe the engineers are over complicating the trucks. The fault monitoring systems seem to be less reliable than the systems the monitor.
Had check engine lights for a few days. As long as there is oil pressure and the engine temp is right and firing smooth, I keep going. The warning lights went out 2 weeks ago and still running.

I am thinking about taking loads from Richmond, VA area to the Greensboro, NC area and back to Richmond area. I'm thinking that'll get me around $800-$1000/day gross. Can anyone advise on this?

Your HOS.
Your sleep schedule.
Appointment times.
What other loads pay in the area.
What other loads are paying elsewhere.
Take into account it's Sunday night which means it's all leftovers on the board now.
And in Winter time you have to take into account storms.
What are markets like per area now.
Live loads vs drop and hook and managing your time.
There's a LOT that goes in picking loads and getting the most out of it. There's no simple answer.
You learn as time goes on.. in fact I'm still learning. The learning never ends man.Last edited: Jul 5, 2015

I mean since I do not have access to the Choice board, can someone punch these two areas with a 100 mile radius around both locales and provide their findings?

Freight is fine in Virginia (for rates) but it's not a heavy market for lots of loads.
NC is a little better.
Yesterday I got lucky and took a load from NJ 350 miles into VA. The load paid $2 a mile.. with my deadhead I was at around $1.65 all miles.
I didn't wake up and say... hey I wanna go to VA today.
It was more of whenever I can escape the Northeast for an okay rate my butt takes it soo fast and I don't think twice about it. I don't care where it's going because it's never easy to escape the Northeast for a good rate and there's always big bucks going back in.
What non choice drivers don't understand is loads, markets and rates change all the time.
You can't say oh there's always gonna be a VA load to NC and back that pays this amount and will always be there for me. It doesn't work like that.
There's a lot of dedicated shippers where rates stay the same besides FSC but still that doesn't mean those loads will always be there for you.Last edited: Jul 5, 2015
