It's not Schneider's IC program I have a problem with - it's the ENTIRE 1099 system.
I've said before y'all meet the legal definition, I've said y'all are running your business how you see fit. I'm not attacking anyone for their choices in business or life.
I am concerned with the growth of "industry disruptors" and their relationship with employees/contractors, regulations, and tax compliance.
Look at Uber vs taxi or livery drivers. Uber is cheap because they're not paying all the licensing fees normal car hire companies do and Uber doesn't pay it's drivers as employees. That's great for some but long term I think it's bad for society as a whole.
Our great grandparents and grandparents generation fought hard to enact workplace safety and workers protection laws. "Independent Contractors" fall outside of those protections. Paying workers as ICs says up to 40% over paying them as employees. Why is it so .much cheaper? No health insurance, no social security, no workman's comp.
As a consumer how do I know I'm dealing with an independent contractor or an employee? If I have issues or complaints who do I address them with? Who is responsible for making.me whole? Many companies actions are determined by risk reward. If there is little to no risk of being held accountable (ie sued) they will take larger risks.
Why have wages stagnated over the last 20 years? There are many factors but one is companies like Wal-Mart whose low prices come in part from their employee policies which lead to full time workers living below their local poverty line.
I feel the growth of 1099 "employees" is a dangerous to us all.

So what I get out of what just said is that more government regulation and control will solve everything. Why should a taxi company have to pay for a license it's nothing more a bribe. If I pay you you allow me to drive people around. Why not drop the requirement for a taxi license and lower the cost of doing business instead of raising it.

No, what I'm saying is if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck then we should treat it as a duck.
I recognize the need for regulations that are poignant and reasonable. Unjust, ill concieved, or unnecessarily onerous regulations should be removed. If an entity believes a regulation is unjust or unnecessary then they should fight it directly. The use of "independent contractors" to avoid costs and liability is akin to using off shore tax shelters. It may be technically legal but it doesn't make it right.TennMan, Western flyer and drvrtech77 Thank this. -

Why is it Schneider always sends you in the opposite direction to get an empty?
Even if it means they have to pay you $50- $100 for the miles?
Makes no sense.
Oh yeah it does, I'm at a mega carrier... duh -

Around 15 trucks all needing empties at around the same time on a Saturday morning.
Customers I knew nearby didnt have any empties.
Schneider eventually gave up and didnt send me anywhere yesterday because they showed no empties anywhere remotely nearby.
I gave up also, i went to customers i knew of and they didnt have any or wouldnt release.mxpx148 Thanks this. -
