Im looking at a lot of nice trucks online. Most are 2ooo miles away. What do I have to do in order to go pick up that truck and drive it 2000 miles home?? (current tags of course).
CAn I pull a load home for someone if Im all set up with ins and DOT #. ?

Yes why not have a mechanic look at it first, never trust anyone
Team818 Thanks this. -
OH for sure..I will do that at a minimum.
But Im asking more for DOT/legal issues. Can I just drive a "commercial" vehicle across the country if I dont have any numbers yet. (except INsurance)
I figure as long as the tags are current then Im go to go..??? Yes? Of will I need a valid MC# and IFTA tags etc?? Im talking about bobtail only. -
You won’t get loads without dot and Mc numbers, registration and ifta is different.
now if you get pulled over moving a load without registration and bunch of other paperwork you could be looking at heavy fines. Depends on the officer.
As for driving it home? You would need a moving permits across all states you plan on traveling in. Since you don’t have registration this is needed. -
If you're buying from a dealer it should have an in transit temp and a current inspection provided by the dealership, If so you are clear to bobtail home but only bobtail.

Hypothetical Question.... say you have your DOT& MC# s.. plates & insurance all lined up you buy a truck 2000 miles away...
A.... you gonna spend the money to buy a trailer .. (if you can even find 1 right now worth buying ) just to haul 1 load back towards home ??
Or are you gonna look for a LTL load that will fit in a 4×8 crate and just strap it on the frame rails ?
B If you do bring a load back you must have alot of faith in your buying ability to buy a truck and or trailer 2000 miles away ...jump in it throw a load on and haul ### and expect everything to go according to plan.. no break downs or paper work issues and deliver the load on time... -
getting it home is easy, temp tag and insurance.
but the truck needs to be checked, get a Dyno/blowby, get the fluids analysed, and a mechinic look at the entire truck from bumper to tail lights.
nothing sucks more than getting 750 miles from where you bought it from and have it on the side of the road.baha, Speed_Drums and Team818 Thank this. -
U have to have at truck to get your numbers, it's going to take u a month, if your going to get everything, and then go get the truck sign in with some one work your way home or sing on power only

Be careful where you park also, someone might run into the back of you. Say it was your fault. We are seeing those wrecks more and more lately. In CA, so if you are going there and the hood fly open as the motor explodes make sure you get to a side street or truckstop to park. Remember its YOUR fault.

You will need the money out where you looking at the trucks you wish to have ck. on dino. and have a ecm report printed out so you can pick the best truck of the ones you want to buy, A truck with a apu. will have less idle time on it?
Team818 Thanks this.
