i just recently quit my job as as an acid pump operator and bought my first tractor and trailer expecting to lease with a pipe hauling company a friend works for in odessa. it took me a week and a good chunk of change to get everything i need together to get started, and today i went to this company to apply and let them check out my truck, but the guy told me they aren't hiring currently and wouldn't even let me drop an application. so i'm really bummed because it was going to be a really great job that pays well more than my last job. i called another pipe hauling company i knew of and they told me the same thing.
so now i'm jobless with a tractor/trailer sitting in front of my house and i'm not sure what to do.
can anyone here possibly recommend a good company in the odessa/midland area to haul pipe for? the one i had my heart set on was going to pay 75% per load. so hopefully others are like that with a comparable amount of loads available to choose from.
or if anyone has a good idea about something else i could get into with my rig and 48' flatbed, i'm all ears and would greatly appreciate any kind of advice you could offer.
thanks for reading. i hope there are at least a couple O/O's out there willing to drop me some helpful tips, because i'm pretty stressed out right now with no income and a diminished bank account

BORNtoROAM Thanks this. -
thanks for the tip -
go on odessa craigslist under transport
-
yeah i have been. nothing has really caught my eye yet. seems like the best companies never advertise there. i could be wrong
-
Well if you can afford to be selective you can wait for the right job to come along. If you need to work tommorrow there are tons of jobs on craigslist
BORNtoROAM Thanks this. -
yeah you're exactly right. i'm fine for now since i'm not running the truck and incurring big diesel/maintenance bills. i plan to check back after the first of the year with the company i want to work for because it's common for oilfield companies not to hire at the very end of the year. once they get their new budget they might be looking to add trucks/drivers

McClatchy Brothers is another one that's been around a long time.
Not trying to rag on you, but this is a good lesson to everybody that wants to be an O/O. Have a firm commitment from a company before going out on a limb. Also, have a couple of backups already in mind just in case something goes wrong.
If you haven't already done so, check out Farmer. Don't take 'no' for an answer if they turn you down. Don't piss them off, but keep going back to let them know how badly you want to work with them.
Good luck!Big Duker, Wymon and BORNtoROAM Thank this. -
Yep-d o g is right. E.L. Farmer is really the way to go. They have delivered to our yard up here in Montana-granted they were company drivers, but they knew their stuff and hustled-kind of tells you something about the company as a whole. Good luck BORNtoROAM!
d o g and BORNtoROAM Thank this. -
EL farmer was the 2nd one i called. they said they're not hiring any more til next year. the one i thought i wax going to jump right on with is Pradon. only reason i had such high expectations and had the guts to quit a good job and make this investment is because my friend had been talking about it for months telling me that his friend who works there will get us on as soon as we get trucks. well it was quite a surprise to learn that wasn't the case and that this friend of his hadn't so much ad ever mentioned us to his boss. what made it even more pf a surprise is that this friend of his played an active role in helping me get everything ready to go. i could not believe this bozo hadn't even asked if they were still hiring when we told him we were finally ready to buy trucks. i completely assumed we'd walk in and talk to the bossman and say "Hey, we're the guys so and so has been telling you about" and we'd be whisked through the application process and sent on jobs next week. Oh well. Plan B.
i had heard of mclatchy brothers. they're in midland? forgot about them
i will take your advice on farmer. our "connection" from pradon had told us they were supposed to be good. thanks for the replies i appreciate itd o g Thanks this.
