Sometimes you get lucky and find a spot behind a hotel/restaurant/boarded up shopping center etc. In Melrose Park, Il., there used to be a restaurant in the same shopping center as a Food Lion grocery store that allowed truck parking. I've also parked behind a Holiday Inn somewhere in the burbs. I've parked on the street in Queens, N.Y. I always say, make mental notes of places to park as you approach the shipper/consignee to deliver/pick-up. I've parked in San Francisco, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Jersey, L.A. etc. Just observe.......

Only place I've REALLY felt uncomfortable at lately was an empty Wal-Mart parking lot in Tyler, TX. I DID NOT sleep well that night.
Last night had I not been able to park at the customer I'd have been screwed. I was plum out of hours by the time I was unloaded.
The run I have to make tomorrow will only work if I can park at the consignee. I'm about 95% sure I can.
If I'm in doubt I use a ratchet strap on my door handles.
Oh yeah, I'm parked at a Pilot/Road Ranger at exit 36.5 on I-90 at Hampshire, IL. -
I'd say it comes down to how long you want to leave the truck. If its just for a day of sightseeing there are plenty of places that you can drop the rig for a while. If its multiple days, get a hotel and park it where you can see it from your room.
