I live in Maryland, plan on moving to another state in 2 months (North Dakota or Louisiana) since my apartment lease ends on last day of July. Should I get my CDL in Maryland now or should I wait til I move to the new state and get it? What do you think? Wouldn't it be a waste to pay for all the fees in my current state and have to do it all over again in the new state in 2 months?

What's the best move? Move to the new state, get the DOT card, get new state driver's license, convert it to a CDL Permit once I pass the written exam then get the CDL license with endorsements?

I plan on trading in my car and get a pickup truck in these final months in MD. I will either rent a storage facility to store my belongings or sell it off and take what I can haul in the pick up truck or I could rent a Uhaul cargo box thing and bring everything with me. I live in a studio apartment so my belonging aren't a lot (no furnitures, mattress or bed). Most of my stuff are personal belongings (CDs, electronics, musical equipments, clothes, and hundreds of pounds of weight lifting plate weights). The weights are expensive so I am not sure if I want to sell it cheap on craigslist or bring it with me. Maybe the oilfields I plan on working in would have a gym anyway right?

what would be the benefit to get it all done now?

you leave yourself with work and spending more money once you move

well getting it done now means I would have the CDL now. Is it a good thing? It's not like I would look for a CDL job in my current state then leave in 2 months. I would get a bad reference wouldn't I? I'm sure any hiring company would not be happy?

Not sure if all states are the same, but I had planned on moving to California from Wis. and was told my Wis. CDL was no good, and had to start all over. Same in Colorado, had to surrender my CDL, and start all over. Well, needless to say, I opted not to do that, but you might want to make sure before you waste any time with one state.

You may want to first get settled into the new state that you are moving into. Afterwards, get a drivers license of the state that you are settled in. Once you are fully settled in your new state, received your new state drivers license, then start the process of getting your CDL.

Good luck to you! God bless you and your entire family!

How is it a "good thing"?
There is no point to have it now unless you were to start working now before your move.
It's a waste of money with no benefits.
When you are settled then focus on your next step.

Never heard of that. I transferred my CDL from UT to CO with no problem. Just had to pay a fee. In fact on the Colorado DMV site in the FAQ section it states:
[h=3]I just moved to Colorado and have a CDL from another state. Is it transferable?[/h] As long as the out-of-state license is current you can trade it in for the Colorado version.

[h=3]I have a valid CDL from Minnesota, but my family just moved here to Wisconsin. Do I need to get a Wisconsin license, too?[/h]Actually, you will need to surrender your Minnesota CDL and apply for a Wisconsin CDL. According to Federal law, you may hold only one driver's license of any type, at any one time. You'll have 30 days in which to surrender your Minnesota license and apply for the transfer to a Wisconsin license.
I was informed of this for Cal. as well.

If you aren't going to use it before you move I'd just wait til I got to where I was going. If you don't go to work for a company that sends you to their own Dr., and you need to get a DOT physical on your own to get the CDL, make sure the Dr. is DOT Certified and in the Federal Registry. Not just any Dr. can do a DOT physical. They have to be in the Federal Registry.

    Best of luck.
