Hi I need to know if there is a form I can fill out, sign, get notarized whatever....that lists one of my employees as my designated maintenance person? Or certified mechanic? I have my annual inspections done and I have all my copies for that. This would be for the little stuff like signing off that example, brakes were adjusted after roadside inspections etc. I was told you don't need certified mechanic for that. Any advise? Thanks in advance.....I would rather have root canal than do this seriously

FMCSA part 396.19 specifically or read all of part 396.

New entrant safety audit? They are going to look for maintenance records, and for a schedule of/for maintenance. They are very interested in these records. Brake inspectors need to have some form of certification, and so do those responsible for annual inspections in states w/o state inspections. My state does state inspections, so I need to take the rigs in for a sticker--they really don't check much and it wastes 50 bucks. If you look at the regs, FMCSA is fairly lenient about allowing experience to count, but you'll need to make up something that lists and confirms your guy meets the requirements listed in section 396. When I had my safety audit he was much more interested in the maintenance records than in who performed the work. I used the forms in their PDF ( ETA - A Motor Carrier's Guide to Improving Highway Safety - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ), and it turned out it was the same source he used for copies to bring with him.

Drug compliance will be the majority of your audit. Make sure it's all organized and all done correctly. If it's a new entrant the officer isn't there to fail you but to help make sure you are compliant. Not doing random or pre employment drug screens will fail you.

    Denisemorgan Thanks this.

The officer will have the form for maintenance. Some states will not allow you to do your maintenance at scales without this certification. Don't worry about that it will not deduct points from your score, but do get it from the officer.

All the forms you need are in the link above. That is the same source the officer will use. Maggard359 is right on about your drug/alcohol compliance being up to speed.

Thanks so much. We are not new entrant, been around along time since 1979 but our last audit was back in 2005. We came out ok, I stay on top of drug alcohol screens etc We get them inspected yearly at the "official" place where they put the sticker and I have my copy of that report. Its a formality basically, and your right a waste of 50 bucks per rig. My husband has been repairing and maintaining our fleet for the last 30 plus years but he doesn't have a "certificate" I'm sure he could probably show these young ones a few things but you know how it is...they want the paper sometimes and I freak out any time government (irs, dot, deq etc) gets in my stuff...you just never know. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it!

Not everyone who works in a shop is certified and most shops don't want pay for certified mechanics.
If you are qualified to inspect it, you are also qualified to fix it
You need documentation of what was done each month on every truck.
