You need KY registered business and truck title in that business name, or a KY DL, proof of residence and title in your name. Then you take lease agreement with your buddy's company, proof of truck insurance and go to the IRP office.
The best way would be to call them directly and ask -
You can go online to whatever states you plan to get your IRP in and see the list of things you need. I know minus the insurance/license/etc, you'll need some type of lease agreement from your buddy.
Cabinover101 Thanks this. -

You want to call a DMV in Kentucky. Find out which DMVs register commercial vehicles for IRP plates. When I registered my truck in TX, I was able to call them for questions and eventually got their email for further questions. I remember they handed me a packet with forms to fill out.

You spend $45 and join OOIDA dot com. Then you call and ask for business service dept. After they get done telling you what a bad idea the whole thing is. They will hold your had thru getting your plate (where you want it from) getting your own authority, insurance, and as much or as little more you want/need.
Remember unlike a web page. That's what they do for a living.Cabinover101, HoneyBadger67 and PE_T Thank this. -
The absolutely FIRST THING is to have your "buddy" go to his lawyer and have a contract created to fulfill his obligations under his authority.
Once he has that contract in hand, then go through it with him and sign it.
Make sure everything is in the contract, rates, pay out times responsibilities.
Second register YOUR truck in YOUR state. Get your insurance and take the contract to get your plates.
Don't let your "buddy" get your plates, you get them. This will allow you to move somewhere else. -
I use a company that does the paper work in Illinois, might find one in Kentucky, The fastest and easiest route is to lease the truck to a carrier and run their plate, or run a single state plate. Without a DOT # you aren't getting an IRP plate
