I want to start applying for companies but I lost all of my paperwork and resumes due to a tornado that destroyed a part of my home last year. I have tried contacting my previous employers but they won't discuss anything about my employment. I contacted the SSA and requested a copy of my employment history but that may take up to four months for them to respond back. I've been out of work since last November and I decided to try trucking due to the lack of jobs available here in Jacksonville. I NEED TO GET TO WORK ANYWAY POSSIBLE!! I know trucking companies need precise dates for employment information so this situation is really slowing up the process. Any of you guys have any advice on what I can do about this? If I tell a company my problem, can I potentially have them send me a copy of my employment since they have access to it anyway? I know it sounds crazy but desperate times call for desperate measures.
PLEASE READ!!! Serious questions about employment history

I lived in Jacksonville for four years and i dont remeber any tornados. Anyhow that sucks that you lost everything. Dont quote me but have you looked on the IRS website im sure that you can find some of your past employment info on there. Well at least the pay side of it. Which is proof of employment and thats all companies are really looking for..... GOOD LUCK

I was in the same boat as you but that was becouse I was self employed right out of high school.I had to show all my w-2 forms and 1099's up to 5 years back, plus they wanted writen statement from my business partner stated I was self employed.Try the IRS they maybe able to help.

Were the tax returns done through a paid preparer?
If so, copies of the information is available there.
IRS can be contacted for copies of your returns. However, be prepared for a lengthy wait.panhandlepat Thanks this. -
As stated if you had a tax preparer do your taxes they are required to keep copies of your w-2's. You may have to pay a small fee for their time of making you copies I'm not sure but they will give you copies. Best of luck.

They are not required to keep copies of the W-2's. Only the tax returns. Some of the return programs do allow for the data for each w-2. -
Here is a link to the irs website for you TRE81. At the bottom of the page it has a paragraph about needing replacements if part of a disaster situation. Says they will possibly expedite the time for you. Good luck.

I do not have the room to keep all of the tax documentation for all of my clients for all of the years. It is the reason I computerized the data and then they keep in their possession.
Just so you know, I have copies of every return I have ever been paid for. Not limited to 10 years. -

On my file, I have them all and it includes the supporting documents back to when I was 15.
