Matlack had owner operators with product pump and compresssed air [for liquid work] and blowers for vacuum and pneumatic too so they could always keep busy but not every carrier does that mix of products.

Our dry bulk company tractors were set up the same way, do it all, almost

My HazMat tanker company was paying drivers at different terminals different rates of CPM, and also different way to pay (percentage of the load, hourly). If I was starting and asked how much ABC Trucking was paying for HazMat, there is no answer. It depends where and for which customer.

No wonder they have to regularly advertise for drivers.

<$1k per week to haul fuel?

If your going for max pay, local dedicated wins everytime in my experience. The problem with OTR is being paid CPM and logging half your work off-duty to fit as many trips as possible within the 70hr clock. Local your paid by the run and that can be negotiated. It comes down to location, company and shipper.

How long has Matlack been out of business now? I remember they bought out PIE Bulk Commodities when I was there and that was in the late 70s.

To add onto this it can get more difficult to know as there can be multiple rates per terminal. At my last company the rates depended on the shipper. You could have a shipper paying $150 for a 3hr roundtrip but a 2hr driver unload and than another shipper paying $400 for a 4hr trip customer unloads.

Very few if any MC307/DOT 407 tanks are baffled unless specifically built for a customer and hauling a dedicated product.
Baffles are to hard to clean and at last check are illegal for food grade.
