I use my jakes every where, even empty.
It saves money on service brake replacements.

But I don't use them in town, thats rude.

    Truckerjo Thanks this.

I think some of the biggest culprits of the jake use (in cities) are dump trucks. Around here, they are using them even on almost completely flat roads, coming up to stop lights, empty or loaded, on the main strips through town. I hear them very often, as I am close to a US highway in the city. There is a line of retail businesses between our place and the highway. This stretch of road (and others where the jakes are used) are areas where it is completely unneccessary, as you're lucky to get near the posted speed limit before you hit the next red light, especially if it's a big truck.

I've never been through Mount Airy, so I don't know what that area is like. There are places I have seen where they have signs posted "No Engine Braking", and I'm thinking "Are you serial?"

The signs I mentioned earlier are outside of town on the grade. The rich folks pushed to have them put up because of the noise that reached their houses on the hillsides.

I might be old fashioned but a truck with dual stacks and the jake rumbling is the coolest thing to see as a child and on up. After I get enough otr exp I want a 379 long nose pete with dual exhaust, no mufflers, jake break that shatters glass, and just belows thick black clouds of smoke out the pipes. That there is a mans truck :) :) :)

Uh-huh, it is, and Kalifornia will remind you just how manly it is every chance they get.

You won't last long I'm afraid. CO issues tickets for straights. One person posted on this forum about getting a ticket for straights at a DOT inspection. Also cops will give you a ticket if they hear you running straight jakes.

And like was already mentioned, CA is only one of several states that will be only too happy to take more of your money for pollution.
