So Keygirl, let me get this straight, you are running a train that hauls 174,000 lbs (79,000 kgs) and it has brake problems like this?

I care enough to say this and stress it a LOT, please either tell these people to get their brakes/retarders fixed NOW or quit but don't drive this junk.

    kaygirl Thanks this.

yup. the very reason i brought up the concerns in the first place. they're not small trucks. if it was a little 8 tonner or something, i wouldn't be so worried about it.

I AGREE with MADMAN. Youre the driver,if you cant operate a safe truck dont. Sometimes in trucking you just have to learn to say .... you I'm not driving this POS till you get it safe. Poor company that doesnt maintain their trucks? TOO CHEAP to maintain their trucks? They're heading for shutdown or lawsuits. I would personally run like hell.

too cheap to maintain their trucks is exactly what was running through my mind. they have a mechanic at the yard, but it seems that if he can't fix a problem, it simply doesn't get fixed. both drivers said the problems with the retarders had been happening for "ages". one of them kept saying that there were 9 or more sensors in the truck's computer for the retarders and it's hard to track down exactly what's causing the malfunction. my thinking is that if the onsite mechanic can't fix it, send it to someone who can. i know it would cost money (and maybe lots of it) to have a truck off the road for repairs, but surely, if you're going to run a trucking company, you would budget for that.

Kaygirl,it would not be the first time a truck had a problem far from it's homeyard.
Now if that problem arose very close to a dealership, where they have the computer to analyse ALL faulty sensors,...................that would be just dumb luck.
And a truck that had no temperature indication because a wire came loose.............you cannot drive that home.
Too great off a risk to damage the engine.
And while in said dealership a "sheila" was to look the mechanic deep in his eyes and ask nicely to look at the retardersystem......................................

lol daf. love your thinking ;)

as it turns out, none of it matters anyway. got a phone call yesterday to say that whilst my driving it fine, neither of the drivers i went out with think i am strong enough to secure the straps over the load or the curtain sider tight enough, so they won't be calling me for any relief work. in a way i'm disappointed and in a way i'm relieved. i know i would have built up strength and gotten quicker with it as time went by, but i also recognise that they need someone who can just do it without struggling. and now i don't have to worry about how they do or do not maintain their vehicles. but i've lost that chance to gain valuable experience. :( :) :( :) talk about mixed emotions.

thanks, daf. yeah, that's what i'm thinking. i kinda believe that things happen for a reason, even if i can't see it right now.
