Back in 1999 cans from LA to the east coast were paying about $4200,,with higher fuel prices today they should be around $6000,,,LA ports are sure easier to haul in and out from than the ports in the north west,,

It's all the Ports in the West having this contract issue. Lines have been crazy up here in the NW.

I love it.....you know what's going on right? The much wider Panama canal opens in 2015 making it prudent to sail to Houston and Fla, East coast ports..... Longshoremen are angling for the best possible contract to protect what jobs will be left when the freight moves East.

Toss in all the carb BS ......and...... West Coast Rail and Port operations will look very different this time next year.

They are already considering another canal beside the 2 for Maersk Triple E, 1300 ft long and 200 ft wide. Haven't opened it and it's already out of date? I invested lots of money in CSX as they are going to get a big boost when the canal is finished. They are cutting all their tunnels for double stack trains, including the 1 in DC which was just approved this week. They are lengthening curves and siding for longer trains too. Mark my word. They are going to get a boost and anyone trucking out of Norfolk who can stand the traffic will do OK as well as at the Inland Port.

There are thousands of new cross docks being built in Phoenix. Shippers will pay big money to the port compliant companies to get goods shipped to Phoenix but they don't have to pay $4 a mile all the way to the east coast, they just pay a few hundred bucks to get it cross docked to SWIFT, Knight, or el cheapo independent.

Oh, one more thing. This "New" CARB thing is 6 years old now so there are plenty of trucks (even old trucks) that are compliant.

I ran the Port of Long Beach back and forth to phoenix for Duncan & Sons out of Buckeye a couple years ago as a company driver when I lived in Mesa for a year. I wouldn't mind running this as an O/O. Good money but sure a lot of hassle too. Those longshoremen sure have an attitude and you're just a piss ant in their game. The chassis always need something before you can leave. Best carry parts and do it yourself or wait for hours on end to have it fixed. Carry a small maul!
