Hi all,
I'm looking to go to Roadmaster school for my CDL.. I asked the guy if my empty work history for the past four years would be a problem when it comes time to getting hired, he told me it wouldnt be a problem, because I'm going to Roadmaster, which is a top-notch school and companies would overlook that since I would have graduated from Roadmaster....
I've read some about Roadmaster, and I do believe that it is a good school, but at the same time I'm worried that not being employed for the last four years would hinder me from being employed.
I don't want to get financed for the school, only to find out that I'm unemployable once I get my CDL.
Any ideas or thoughts?
THANKS!
EDIT: Even if I have to start out with a less than preferable company when starting out, due to my past work experience, I will. I'll do what I have to until I get experience and move on to a better company in a year (or more).
Possible to get hired with an empty work history?

Roadmaster is just another CDL Mill. They are all pretty much the same. They are there just to get you your license and prepare you to go with a trainer. No more, no less. By no means are you a professional driver when you leave there. You pretty much just have a grasp on driving techniques.
As far as job history, do you have any 1099's or anything to show employment. No matter what you will to show what you have been doing for the past 10 years. If you do not have any record of employment at all you will need a certified letter stating where and what you were doing during this period of time. This is more of federal thing than a company issue. Its standard and on all applications.
Keep in mind that the recruiter at the school you are talking too is just that. He is a salesman for the school! Could care less if you get a job once you sign on the dotted line and give him your $6000.00! If I were you I would take the time to call around to several different companies and see what they have to say about your employment status before even considering school. This will give you a good idea about what you are getting into before you spend all that money.TRKRSHONEY, Emnitfoe and Big Don Thank this. -
It will be a problem. Most carriers want verfiable employment experience for the last 3 years, to show you "demonstrate an interest in being steadily employed". You'll need to "create" a work history, get affidavits from people regarding your activities, etc. It's not impossible. Get pre-hires from at least 3 carriers BEFORE commiting to school.TRKRSHONEY and Emnitfoe Thank this. -
It is 3 years for new drivers
10 years for experienced drivers
just for clarafication
I was self employed for over 30 years
if you were a house husband relatives can verify that
letter from my accountant sufficed but again if you were incarcersted for last 4 years might be an issueTRKRSHONEY and Emnitfoe Thank this. -
Thanks for your responses and help!
I'm putting in calls to the companies listed that hire new drivers, see if any would be willing to give me a chance. I hope they'll believe me when I tell them I am determined and earnest about becoming a truck driver.
I've never been arrested in my life, no drugs in my system since I was a teen, clean driving record. I've been looking for a job for the last few years, I've just had an incredible ration of bad luck, so in the mean time I was helping out my mother with some basic needs around the house. She's not sick, she just has a hard time doing a couple of things around the house. Maybe if she corroborates this, a company would be more inclined to give me a shot? I really want to get on the road and have a chance of making some money. -
Roadmaster is classed as one of the top 3 driving schools in the nation.
You have a good idea to make some phone calls.
Call here also : Navajo.com (it's also listed on this site)
Swift school is certified and recognized throughout USA & Canada.
Try to get started in refrigerated(reefers) for the best pay for now. Tankers is best pay, but require some experience first. -
If you were unemployed, you were unemployed. I don't know that you'll need to try too hard to corroborate that. That being said, I would expect that your extended period of unemployment will likely limit your first job options. It will limit them, but I doubt it will eliminate them completely. You'll find someone who will take you one. Most likely it won't be a company that will treat you very well nor pay you very well. But if you tough it out and get a year or more of employment history with someone on your recent record, your previous unemployment will become much less of an issue and you should have just about as many options as anyone else with a year of driving under their belt. By 3 years, you'll be able to go almost anywhere. Good luck.

I was unemployed and a stay at home father for 4 years before starting with SWIFT. They wanted a letter from 2 people stating what I'd been doing for the last 4 years. Gave them a letter from a roommate and my aunt. No questions asked about it.

You should be fine man! Those letters should be sufficient. With your clean record you should be good to go!

All good info, thanks guys! I myself have a couple small gaps in the last couple years and was wondering how I was going to get around that.
