I have been invited to orientation at Mcelroy in Pleasant Hill, NC. Very excited, but very nervous as well. Have heard mostly good things about the company. I have heard horror stories of drivers feeling used and then not being hired upon completion of orientation. I guess my biggest question is, As a new driver and this being my first gig, do I have a fair chance of getting this job. I have heard and read that flatbed is alot of work, and I feel i have a great work ethic but I'm nervous of my ability to grasp the driving techniques needed as well as the making sure that I secure my load properly. It's a dedicated Lowes account in Hagerstown, Md. Thanks for any advice or words of wisdom. Safe Travels To All..
Possibly my 1st Gig!! Help

People that did'nt make it thru orientation could be they failed the physical could be their 10 yr work history was incomplete.I would ask your recruiter if you need to bring anything to orientation.Ask her why some have failed orientation. Sometimes companies don't do a thourghal background check till you're at orientation. As long as everything is in order,I would'nt stress.

Thanks Pattyj....I'm getting a late start in this career choice at 38, but my driving record and background are completely clean of any discrepancies. I guess I'm more worried of not having any load securement experience...and how do you practice lifting a 100lb tarp..lol!
-
you will get plenty of practice lifting tarps. Lift with your legs not your back. Forklift drivers are your friends when dealing with tarps.
When in doubt about tie down, put more on. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
You'll get the hang of it..
Good luck on the new job..chitownhenry Thanks this. -

You should do fine with pulling a flat bed. I did it for 15 years, and one thing that you have to remember. Nothing against my dry van and refer pulling brothers and sisters, but flatbedders are a totally different breed. For the most part they are always willing to help and give you advice on how to secure the load, help with tarping, etc etc. Just remember, you do not have walls to hold that stuff on or in, just take your time and use your common sense. Speed and proficiency will come with time
Hope this helps a little and just be careful. God Bless and welcome to the trucking family

Some tarps are lighter then 100 pounds. The older 2 piece 8' drop lumber tarps can be upwards of that, if not more. Most seem to be around 70ish pounds these days, cept for those kevlars, but then they are #### expensive too.

Ya those tarps are heavy. You won't have to lift it.You get a forklift driver and they'll lift it for you.

Chitown, I work for Mcelroy (OTR) and pull out of Hagerstown every now and then. That is a great gig to get on if you can. You will generally run 2 short loads a day. All the dedicated guys up there are more than willing to help you with any tie down questions you have. You will most likely go with a trainer for 4 weeks, and if you will be dedicated to hagerstown, all your training will be there. Its a great opporitunity if you can get it. If I lived closer, id do it myself. Feel free to pm me with anymore questions or ask on here. Good luck!!

Oh, and our tarps are quite heavy. 100 lbs is not an understatement, ESPECIALLY if they are wet. But there are VERY few forklift drivers that wont lift them for you. As long as you havent hidden anything on your app and job history, and are in good shape for the physical agility test, you should have no problem making it through. They wont bring you down and pay your hotel room just to let you go...
