They already do that most call it Relaying. The LTL companies do it all the time. But No I don't believe there's ever going to be an end to OTR. Until they start beaming stuff up like scottie. Now there have been a bunch more refrigerated companies like Marten. Who have started using the rail. Just know most of those loads have crappy delivery times and those trailers are used more for storage. Also with the 14 hr rules etc. Waiting for your driver to bring you a trailer can mess up delivery times if there is a delay on one end. Say guy gets a flat tire or minor mechanical issue. Now if you run a tight shift you won't be able to make it back to the yard because of his/her delay so both loads are late.
OTR is here to stay baby!!

Say guy gets a flat tire or minor mechanical issue.
And that never happens with OTR trucking ,
I know LTL uses relaying but heck its not like I never did it in the past 40 years a time or 2 -

Most companies when a guy is running out of hours will try to set up a relay. So load can be on time. But to have have a national system of just relays. I'd hate to be on the end where I have to deliver and open the door and stuff is falling out because jim bob likes to take his corners at full speed, and whip in and out traffic.
But hey your name is flatbed. Should of spoke slowwwwwwer. -
I don't think it will happen any time soon, even if rail is getting popular for shippers, it is harder to load a rail car with varying amount of freight from different shippers at this point or anytime soon because rail is still inflexible for the next 30 or so years.
