Nope, it’s a converter dolly hooked to the lead trailer just like today except the dolly has a kingpin and the trailer has a fifth wheel flipped upside down.

That would be a whole different setup from what we use up here then, but we don't pull short doubles either.

Ah, ok, we do use that setup some, it is actually a better setup than a dolly if the lead trailer is built for it.
They are not real popular, but there are some side dumps around set up with the fifth wheel on the trailer.

    booley and FerrissWheel Thank this.

I'm not sure who your talking to but i highly doubt you use the type of setup I'm talking about, I've only seen them in pictures and I can't find them any where

I was talking to you, and no we do not use a dolly when the fifth wheel is on the trailer, no reason or advantage to it. We do have some setups with the fifth wheel on the trailer like I described, the trailers are 4 axle units and the back trailer hooks directly up on it. Then you can pull doubles, but have the luxory of being able to back up too., not to mention they handle better when you eliminate that extra joint. They pull basically the same as a b train, just longer.

    booley and FerrissWheel Thank this.

Terrific, I understand how all that works.I simply asked a question about an antique trailer setup and its been twisted into this convoluted conversation. We use pneumatic tires and diesel fuel today also but at one time we didn't that's just as relevant as whatever you're talking about I guess.

Man I looked high and low, it’s one of those things I saw in a magazine or random website and made a mental note but didn’t keep it. I remember thinking at the time it was odd even for then, imagine the transition period when they were phasing them out?

booley, cke, Art Vandelay and 2 others Thank this.
