Glad no one was hurt and you was able to not let it ruin your career. Stuff happens and I know I would prefer to have a 30yr veteran with one accident than the rookies with two three in less than a year.
Was that back when they was doing all that work just outside Baton Rouge I know I was working down therei for almost a year and atleast 4 wrecks a week in the construction area.

Yes, but in that thing it would be a luxury cruise.
tsavory Thanks this. -
I was heading east bound and had just come across that long bridge where trucks are only allowed in the right lane and limited to 50 or 55 mph. It was raining with a fair amount of truck traffic. I was stuck behind a guy doing 35 - 40 the whole way across.
We got to the point where the truck lane restriction was lifted. Soon as I saw the sign, I looked in my mirror and the left lane was clear ahead of me for about 1/2 mi. Being empty, I jump over into the left and put the hammer down.
There was a pick up truck about 1000 ft ahead of me. He was the last vehicle I saw and he disappeared over the crest of the next bridge as we were approaching Baton Rouge. I never saw him hit his brake lights,.. so I assumed it was going to be clear and had just gone into high gear,.. about 52 - 55 mph when I saw that pick up at a dead stop with about 1 mile of stopped traffic in front of him. They were all stopped because of another accident where a truck jack knifed off into the median. At least he had an out. My only out was 35ft over the side of the bridge and I honestly tried to put it over the rail,.. just bounced off instead. ABS kicked in as I was trying to stop,.. I had the brake mashed,.. but truck felt like no brakes were working. The flat spots on the tires told me that yes they were all working,.. I was just hydroplaning on about 1/2 inch of rain water on the bridge.
Next to my brother almost dying in the hospital this was probably the second most traumatic experience I have have had happen to me. What if I killed someone one? What if I killed my wife if we went over the rail? What would our kids have done with out us? What would happen to my brother (Disabled in a wheel chair and depends on my support), what if one of the children were disfigured or what about the mental well being after what they went through? My mind wandered and replayed the scenario over and over. What could I have done differently. The only answer was to slow down and never assume what you cant see will be clear.
After the truck was repaired, I was felt like ill getting back in the seat. My wife came back out with me to show her support. We rolled the rest of the summer together till mid Sept. I will never forget and was very humbled by the experience.
This is the front of my truck now. I really need to cover those primer spots. I've gotten 4 inspections in the last 2 months where I only had 1 inspection in all of last year. LOL

All we can do as drivers is keep safe.CanadianVaquero, 281ric, tsavory and 2 others Thank this. -
I just asked because while I was working down there the westbound construction was just starting on the exit of our hotel and atleast 4 times aweek there was a wreck and mainly from trucks taking the lane shift to fast it was a bit sharp and rolled left right left not paying attention or holding the wheel proper caused lots people to lose control. I think in two months had four semis actually ride up and get stuck on the median barriers. Thats not counting the cars and trucks that just hit them or eachother. -
Humility and taking responsibility. Maybe you didn't get the memo, but nobody does that anymore.
You're a class act Hurst.
CanadianVaquero, 281ric, tsavory and 2 others Thank this. -

If ya had a dog in the truck. Hopefully he wasn't doing this as you drove over that mound in the road.?Hurst, Cetane+, tsavory and 1 other person Thank this. -
I've got a Rotti that comes out with me from time to time.
Good thing she wasnt with me,.. this is all she does while out on the road.

Thats my little girl. Very sweet tempered for a Rotti, but she is very protective in that seat. No one gets near my truck with out a warning from her.
HurstSleepy68, tsavory and peterbilt_2005 Thank this.
