I mean the clevis hook directly on the stake pocket. Going around, or through the pocket is going to have a higher WLL. That second to last picture just doesn’t look right to me.

We used to stack and unstuck trailers all the time by just putting 4 hooks in 4 pockets to pick up the trailer. I was just on a jobsite a few weeks ago and the rigging crew did it the same way…almost…using 4 chokers shackled to 4 stake pockets

Yeah… but if the trailer weighs 10k then it’s only 2.5k per stake pocket. Would you trust chains through a single pocket for a coil?

On my coil, I was forced to use a stake pocket for one chain. If I had shorter timbers I could have used a j-hook, but since the slot was covered, I went around the entire pocket. 47k lbs coil ÷ 12 points = ~3,900# if the trailer was held upside down. Now I do have a habit of hooking the clevis to a stake pocket on lighter stuff, like my little wire spools. There really isn't a scenario outside of total annihilation that something light is going to be able to rip through a pocket.

Mind you, that depends on the manufacturer's test ratings. That kind of looks like either the Reitnouer or Mac charts, but the 'approved' WLL is totally dependent on the manufacturer's specs. :)
I am glad that you also know where those charts are, so I don't feel so alone in the wilderness.

Eh....but it can deform it, making it useless for any pipe stakes or portable winches to be used in that pocket, and if it rips the pocket edge, that's a pocket you can't use until it's repaired. I saw a lot of those on aluminum trailers in particular, and occasionally on steel pockets where the weld was cracked or broken. I just tend to use spools only, if I can, and the whole pocket if there is no other choice. Most of the trailers I was hauling early on, didn't have J-hook tracks and plates, and when I got them later at my last employer who did provide them, I used them instead of pockets, to be sure. :)

When googling chain through a pocket I did find these. I love the idea as it can hold the chain in the slot instead of just looping it. However it’s ridiculously pricey for what it is and you’d need a lot of them.

It's from my East user manual. I've considered getting a couple D-ring stake pocket adapter things, but if I did that, it would be another 10 months before I had a chance to try them out. I hauled concrete barriers this week, and one of the other guys had some neat stake pocket brackets made up to hold his timbers. I thought I should make some of those - but then it'd be almost certain I'd never haul them again lol.

I actually have those lol. I use them when I use the pocket winches. Never tried using a chain on them, and not sure I would. They have to lift to catch the pocket, and depending on how you have your link attached, I think it could fall out? I'll have to take a closer look I guess.
